"I think, therfore I can't play blackjack."
Arnold Snyder, Blackbelt in Blackjack pg. 229 (2005)
I would said casinos has a very negative impact in the society.
Casinos induce people to think there are an easy way, and people with no education, fall on this trap. Not to mention drugs and prostitution.
In theory casinos are recreational places where people just go, play a couple of chips and walk away.
It doesn't happend in the every day reality.
Even induced by bright light, luxury buildings, who wants to play a game with negative EV?
In general, I have no problem with Casinos. They provide jobs and entertainment. People will spend their money on stupid things, whether gambling, psychic readings, or buying stuff they don't need to keep up with the Joneses or because they saw a commercial on TV and they just must have it.
We're a service oriented economy, and casinos provide just another service that the public wants. At least most of the money spent/lost at casinos stays in the local economy via wages and state revenue sharing agreements.
Some people have problems and clearly shouldn't gamble, but people should accept responsibility for their actions.
I AP for the challenge of it and because I like games. I don't see casinos as the enemy, but that's just me.
In theory, yes the casino industry is just providing a service like many other services and is not responsible for those that abuse it. I agree, those folk do need to take responsibility for their own actions. However, some of the industry practices which encourage these weaker individuals to get into trouble, I find objectionable. The practice of supplying free liquor so that folks won't make responsible decision is one of those practices. Cashing paychecks and government assistant checks is another. Especially offering a bonus to those that cash their checks. Ever been to one of the local type places in Vegas, like a stations or boyd casino on a friday evening or on the first of the month? And the little disclaimer at the bottom of the receipt directing folks that get into trouble to 1-800-gambler, does not absolve the industry of this harmful practice in my mind.
To a lesser extend I find the greed that the industry has shown in downgrading games (h17 and 6-5 BJ, lesser payout on VP and slots) objectionable. So while it IS all about the money for me, for these reasons, yes it does give me a little extra pleasure to make my living off this industry and take my small cut of their profits.
Bingo! And to answer your question, perhaps it's a way to justify his enthusiasm for revealing AP techniques, or a way to alleviate and guilt for making his former colleagues' lives difficult in order to make himself seem sharper by fallaciously dumping them into the "greedy, only in it for the money" or "naive idealist" categories. Jacobson knows better — he's only fooling himself on this one.
Elliot is off the wall and always has been. I think he would find a way to rationalize the Nazi Holocaust against Jews and many other groups.
Of course there are others we have seen of late, and the one who comes to mind, and who attempted to do great harm to some hard core AP's is a sneaky Bast### that once posted under an alias of "Tulip".
I will say this to all you guys and gals, choose your AP FRIENDS CAREFULLY. If you have a dozen or so you can truly trust, consider yourself lucky.

Good Article! I don't consider myself or the casino to be evil. I don't think I am helping or hurting society with my play. I play because I am bored and enjoy the journey. The money is a big part of it too. I couldn't justify spending so many hours at the casino if I were not making good money. We all need to generate income. I could probably make about as much money doing something that "benefits society," but I don't think I would enjoy it as much.
You're still on that?! You have no idea who "tulip" is, and you're 100% wrong about his intentions. I know this because I know who he is and have spoken with him personally about it on several occasions. Well, I guess some people are just set in their ways, so carry on I guess.
I suspect that many serious APs are also puzzle fanatics. To me, AP is just a big puzzle that is meant to be unsolvable, and the pleasure I get out of my work comes from being able to solve that puzzle. When I get a newspaper, I always do the crosswords, sudoku, kakuro, Jumble, and cryptoquote, as well as occasionally make a pathetic attempt at the chess puzzle. My library at home is filled with lateral thinking puzzle books, 5-minute mysteries (a guilty pleasure), and shelves upon shelves of board games. I must have 5 backgammon sets or more. The money is nice, but simply beating the game is what I enjoy.
Besides, who says your work has to benefit society? A 9-5 office worker in a cubicle at an insurance company is going to have a hard time explaining their job's worth to society, but who cares? Your career is not your life.
