    Katarina Walker

    Very upsetting news. Katarina passed away in her sleep. She was an incredible woman. Obviously highly intelligent and focused. We chatted on the phone numerous times before her book came out, about Blackjack of course, but also current events, world politics, etc. She was passionate in her beliefs, strong-willed, deeply in love with her husband, filled with life, indefatigable, a true joy to chat with. Words fail.

    I didn't think she as that old- her book was and still is a classic, though I do understand that count systems for pontoon/Spanish have improved.

    Very sad news. Her book was of particular importance to Australians given our Pontoon game. Hopefully her legacy lives on at the 0.36% HE Pontoon game available somewhere here in Oz!

    Appears she passed away 3 months ago. Obit suggests that she was ill.

    This saddens me.

    I had spoken to Katarina several times

    (about her book on Span21 of course)

    I knew that she had serious health concerns

    so this was not a complete surprise to me,

    but it is sad news nonetheless.

    Katarina wrote in her book (which I purchased) that she planned on writing a second book on Spanish 21 in the future, which would incorporate higher level strategies than the simplistic count she presented in her first work. Guess that responsibility falls on someone else, now.

    Corrections to K. Walker's book from the AUTHOR:


    Page 16: Basic strategy for H17 with redoubling. The play for 9 versus 7 should
    be H, 10 versus 7 should be D4, 10 versus 8 should be D3, 11 versus 7 should be
    D4, and 11 versus 8 should be D4.


    Page 35: In the last paragraph, lines 6 and 7, delete "double on nine against
    seven and draw three (or A-2)".


    Page 35: In the last paragraph, line 9, the word "nine" should be "ten".


    Page 35: In the last paragraph, lines 10-12, delete the sentence "In fact, the
    only reason why we double on nine versus seven is because a redouble rescue on
    hard twelve is the correct play."


    Page 45: In Table 4.8, HE for 8-deck H17 with redoubling should be 0.44%, and
    HE(TT) for 8-deck H17 with redoubling should be 0.36%.


    Page 154: The last line of Table A9 should read "9-9 7 S/P 1".
