• A Casino on Coney Island?

Like most New Yorkers, the closest I’ve come to Coney Island is watching a Woody Allen movie. Although it’s in the city, it’s about 20 miles from here. But, I’d certainly visit a casino there. Presumably that’s why the Brooklyn Borough President supports the idea.

It still needs NY state constitutional amendment. "The state Legislature has to once again pass a constitutional amendment to approve the casinos and then the move must be approved by voters."

Closest I ever got was watching the movie The Warriors.

Hmm would be quite the dilemma getting there. Wouldn't want to take a subway there with a huge wad of cash in your wallet, and wouldn't want to drive through NYC traffic. Both would be quite the epic Odyssey, like The Warriors but in reverse, fighting off gangs in baseball outfits and KISS like clown makeup and what not (at least that's my understanding of NYC from The Warriors).

It's not like that at all, Gamblor. In all actuality it's more like another movie entitled, "Escape from New York" that had Kurt Russell in it. Driving through NYC is not something most people would not want to do too often if they can help it. I'm thinking it would be an interesting experience for many to go to this location and back from whence they came.

I think the fearless leader of this forum, Norm is from NYC someplace but I'm sure his typical day could be compared to Charleton Heston in another movie called, "The Omega Man".

Many years back, a comment was made by someone about never going to a casino in NYC because of the crime. Quite absurd, of course. The crime rate in NYC is far lower than that of Las Vegas; and the subways have a lower crime rate than the street. Five million people a day use the subway. Fewer than six crimes a day are reported. That’s not quite a one in a million chance of becoming the victim of a crime. The rate in Las Vegas is about one in 8,300. Murders in the subway system are extremely rare. About two dozen deaths occur a year out of 1.8 billion riders. But, they are mostly accidents, suicides or natural causes. With 1.8 billion rides, some people are just going to drop dead.

I too, after living here for 20+ years, have rarely been to Coney Island. Was there only a couple of times hosting some friends... Wait a minute, does that beautiful Russian girl I was dating in Brighton Beach count as Coney Island??

A casino in Coney Island is wonderful news!! Not for its' location per se', but rather, as direct competition to Resort World Casino out at the Aqueduct - just as I had hoped!! This way, hopefully, by not being the only game in town, they will be forced to offer some descent games!

Also, there is mention of Willets Point being interested in a license. This is very interesting to me as its' location is quite favorable to the majority Asian population that live there. Not to mention it's vicinity to Citi Field, former Shea Stadium, and Flushing Meadows Park!

If they would offer good games, that could really do a number to the oh-so many casinos that need the Asian gambler to survive such as Mohegan Sun and etc...

Wow, a casino by Main Street would be right in their backyards!!!

Norm - you may be right about Manhattan and crime, thanks to Mayor Guiliani and his stance on crime, big or small, but Coney Island has been an unsafe dump for many years and remains so.

Guiliani was very good about reducing crime stats. By instructing commanders to reduce the stats -- not the crimes. There were a few reporting scandals during that period.

Perhaps, but I feel very different about riding the subway now vs. in the 70s or 80s.
