• Facial recognition ponderings

Today's article on one of the pioneers of facial recognition in the NYTimes, wondering what he hath wrought. I've long thought that facial recognition in casinos was not ready for prime time. But, there is an inevitability about technology that can't be ignored.

By coincidence, Unforgettable is filming a block from here tomorrow. I'll be avoiding cameras.

Dear ol Dr. Atick opened up a can of worms that is ripe for abuse. Welcome to the New World. Privacy, a thing of the past. I hope that he is happy that his own technology is being used against him and his family, don't forget to take your shoes off.

Is Atick a blood sucker? Was that a can of bloodworms? Probably not very punny but I couldn't resist.

One of the really unuasual things in nature I witnessed was the spawning of the bloodworms. It usually goes unnoticed when it happens every year. We were fishing in Wachaprague Inlet and were really loading the boat with huge croaker 2.5 pounds and up. I was casting an artificial rig (bucktail jig with a tandem set up so it had two bucktails on the line). Most casts I caught 2 croaker but sometimes only one. They wouldn't bring the money at the market that the fish we came to catch but the shear numbers were starting to make for a big payday. All of the sudden the bite completely stopped. After enough futile casts coming back without even a bump on the line I stopped and put my rod down to look around to see if I could figure out what just happened. What I eventually noticed was there were blood worms swimming everywhere in the water. They were swimming in and out of our free drain holes into the low area of the boat for ponding water taken on before it ran out the holes. Every bloodworm had come up out of the mud and sand at the same time and were spawning. If your bait didn't look like a live bloodworm swimming in the water nothing would touch it. I am not certain if it was a spawn or a migration but they all started swimming at the same time so I assume it was a spawn. I got back to the dock and every boat noticed the bite turn off like a switch but nobody else I talked to realized why. It was mid to late June which is when they spawn. They spawn by swimming to the waters surface and releasing eggs and sperm depending on the sex of the worm and shortly after both sexes die. We called it a day since the fish were all gorged on bloodworms and fishing any further would be a waste of time.
