• More casinos does not mean more gamblers

An interesting study that suggests that opening more and more casinos does not mean more gamblers. Also that the number of people addicted to gambling in Nevada was not disproportionately higher than other states. Not sure why this is a surprise. There were probably more alcoholics during prohibition than before.

what about results from states that do not have legalized gambling such as Texas? For example has there been an increase or decrease in Texans who gamble or who are addicted to gambling with increases in the bordering states casinos or casino expansions? Just a thought....

More casinos does mean better access and that is all that is lacking for many. In this respect, more casinos does mean more gamblers, if by more you mean more playing gamblers.

This is not likely to be true. Nevada's own figures (hard to find -- stunning, I know) indicate a problem gambling rate in the state double to triple the national average.

The PsyCentral article credits Howard Shaffer with observing how low and awesome and admirable the problem gambling rate in Nevada is. Shaffer is associated with the Harvard-associated National Center for Responsible Gaming which is a wing of the American Gaming Association. He is a clown.
