These may be true at the local casino level but as I said, BJ is just a portion of their pie. While some may stop coming because BJ is bad, all the other offerings are still there. At the big corporate level, not the casino level, decisions to close are made. They probably figured that with casinos eventually coming even to New York, nothing they do will make up for it.
In the end, Las Vegas will also suffer if non-Indian casinos ever came to California, to places like the beaches or Carmel/Monterrey.
You mean the bean counter suggestion to go to even money on blackjack to make up the difference isn't going to attract more business while keeping the old customer base? But it will make 1/5th to a half bet for each BJ a customer gets. I know I am thinking that is what it will take to get me to drive by all those new casinos on my way to AC. And that suggestion about cutting comps will also encourage me to remain a loyal AC customer. Remember when the Seven Star Lounge served 6 count shrimp, that decision to go to 60-80 count that I wouldn't even buy myself at the super market makes me want to come even more. Oops I decided to try one of the casinos on my way instead of being insulted. It was enjoyable so I will go back next time and the time after that... Gamblers are creatures of habit and are superstitious. If they get in they try another casino and like it or get "lucky" you just lost a regular cash cow.
When a competitor opens a store up the street you don't raise prices to make up for the loss of business. That is a recipe for certain failure. You become more competitive to keep your current client base. It's Business 101. It is easier to keep a client vase than to try to win it back or find a new one. When competition arose in the state next door AC casinos did the exact thing that would make their customers go somewhere else. That was putting the final nails in the coffin. Cutting costs in a way that attracts customers was the answer.
Tarzan should recieve Post of the month "Hands down".
When BJ is bad, it affects the entire operation. Husbands bring their wives whom likes slots. Friends that bring friends play both slots' and BJ. There is a varity of groups that share in multiple games. They stay at the hotel, they drink and dine. When the BJ player says I'm not going there because of bad Blackjack games, the others will follow him to green pastures. It definetly snow balls in a Bad way for the Casino....
Of Course they may know this. A successful major corporation is not going to close its doors over BJ rules. They could well lower them and go after BJ players again. They have the infrastructure in place, they have beaches and good weather.
The decision to close probably came from major demographic studies that shows they cannot compete when so many casinos are propping in so many states and so many of them are much closer to the population centers that they once used to get their customers from. Casinos, like other businesses often contract out to firms or universities to conduct studies and surveys before they either open for business or considering closing their business.
Once the studies are done, the data has to be interpreted and evaluated. This is the point where many businesses make mistakes. And when the changes that they made don't work out, management starts to make excuses. Every reason will be given for the failure except the real one - they screwed up.
Have you ever been in a casino? Literally every person in there is complaining about how tight the games are and how bad it is, it doesn't matter whether its S17 or H17, 1D or 8D. Those people also come back and play every day. Never underestimate how degenerate casino patrons are.
Friend of mine just returned from a meeting called by all the casino execs to come up with a way to save AC and increase profits. They finally put their heads together and came up with a game plan. BJ pays 10,000 to 1, Single Deck cut to 4 cards, Hand shuffled, Early Surrender, No Hits, No DD, No Splits Dealer gets 2 cards, player gets 1. They figure the players from PA will hear about the BJ odds and the lines of people waiting for an open seat at the tables will wrap around the building. Free drinks, free cigars, high rollers get a free honey to hang on each arm and everyone gets a free 3 course breakfast. Anyone daring to count his card will be back roomed and severely beat with a cat-o-nine tails.
Play within your bankroll, pick your games with care and learn everything you can about the game. The winning will come. It has to. It's in the cards. -- Bryce Carlson
