abc4000, if you do not learn the basics, you might get some wrong ideas in your head. Like some people who think that you should hold off from increasing your bets until you reach an edge where you supposedly win more hands than the dealer.

Gronbog,
Not to nitpick (ok, maybe to nitpick just a bit) but there was no year 0: instead, 1 BC was followed directly by 1 AD.
This means that the first century AD ran from 1 to 100, not from 0 to 99. By extension, the 20th century ended on 12/31/2000, and the 21st century began the next day, on 01/01/2001.

abc4000, did you receive the copy of BJ Attack 3rd edition yet? If you already did take a good look at Appendix C pages 491/4 the effect of rules variations on basic strategy expectations. This appendix is very important! Pay special attention to the second column down, dealers choices and notice that when a dealer hits soft 17 in 6 and 8 deck games "that I think you play" increases the benchmark house edge by - negative 0.215% and neg 0.217% respectively. Most likely this means little to you, however when you add it up with the benchmark "top column" starting house edge becomes significant, for someone just starting out. A good card counter can offset the H 17 rule with using late surrender if available, as the rule is worth at least 200% more than what a basic strategy player can obtain from the rule.
Don S has put in the book the most accurate basic strategy charts on the planet. You must learn perfectly the ones that apply to the games you will be playing in the future when you are not only knowledgeable but confident. Take note these are just two of the starting points to learning to play the game.
