Bettie: Need info on the Tropicana
Was wondering if anyone knew anything about rooms at the Tropicana - are any newer and nicer, have there been recent renovations, and what should I ask the desk clerk for in order to get the nicer rooms? It doesn't have to be top-shelf, just newer if possible.
BTW, The R-J ran a story today about the Trop halting all convention bookings after May 2004, indicating that they are going to be going through some major reconstruction on that property. I've posted the link below.
Thanks for any help,
Bettie

Along with the Riviera, the Trop is about as "old Las Vegas" as it gets. I don't believe any of the rooms have been renovated in a while. They are well maintained, but the decor is vintage 70's.
The Paradise tower is the newest, closest to the strip, right above the casino, and has the largest rooms. IIRC, rooms in this tower have refrigerators.
The Island tower is older, and located above the convention areas, a bit of a walk from the casino.
"Garden Rooms" are the oldest rooms, motel-like structures located around the pool.
I believe that they charge a small premium for the Paradise Tower rooms, but you might be able to sweet-talk a desk clerk into "upgrading" you.
Their website has photos of the rooms. Link below.

Bettie - Parker has given you good info. For the money, I think you are better off elsewhere on the strip. Besides the age of the property, The Trop. has a relatively ugly, low-ceilinged and dark casino. Additionally, it is at the very farthest end of the Strip making it the longest walk to anywhere other than the similarly long-walk properties such as Circus Circus and Stratosphere on the other end of the strip (neither of which I would recommend either). Given the deals available with virtually all strip properties right now, your money goes further elsewhere. If you like that end of the strip....my favorite property is MGM - additionally, MGM/Mirage Corp. comps best among the major players (avoid Park Place Entertainment properties such as Paris and Caesars unless you are not interested in identity gambling/comps. - PPE is the worst in that regard). Good to hear that the Trop. is upgrading, way past due. Have a great trip.

bond trader: One man's opinion
A very good friend of mine stayed there 3 weeks ago, and said it was absolutely terrible. I don't know which tower he stayed in, but he went on and on about how awful it was.

Hi Bettie,
I was just there. The new tower with a view of the strip costs 10 dollars more per night compared to similar rooms elsewhere in the hotel. Didn't see any signs of remodeling. The casino is not dark but the ceiling is definitely low. The place does not compare with newer Hotels.
On the plus side, it seems to me much more like Vegas is supposed to look than most of the newer casinos (I wonder when someone is going to do a new hotel based on the theme of old vegas). That said, I probably won't be staying there next time I go.

Bettie: Thanks everyone!
Thanks for everyone's help. The room isn't for me, but for friends who asked about it for an upcoming trip. I'll be sure to pass along all of the info and opinions.
