Bettie: 4th of July fun
Anyone have any big plans for Independence Day? It's odd to me (having moved here from the Midwest) that the city doesn't have any plans for a big display. I know it's not out of fear because they didn't have one last year, and newspaper reports state that smaller gatherings are the norm. I'm so used to city-wide gatherings, even if it's the small city I grew up in or the massive Chicago display on Lake Michigan every year.
Does anyone know if some of these gatherings here have a better reputation than any others? I was out of the city last year and so wasn't able to attend any event to have any kind of an opinion myself. I'm not looking for drinking or anything other than the quality of the display.
Thanks much,
Bettie

Bettie:
I have no idea about Vegas displays, but with the heat, perhaps your best shot is to just watch the extravaganza in Boston. The Boston Pops Orchestra plays from the Hatch Bandshell located on the Charles river...folks line up for this affair early in the day, this is THE major happening in the Boston area if not in all of New England.
Once the orchestra gets cooking on the William Tell Overture, cannons (firing blanks), located on a bridge join in to make the whole affair very unique. The fireworks display will make you wish you had surround sound and a 54" plasma tube!
There is lead-in entertainment, although last years kinda missed the point with Debbie Reynolds and Cyndi Lauper...Debbie sang her standards, which did not enhance the moment. I think it'll be better this year, but in any event they are only the appetizers.
Wherever you and yours go...happy 4th. Then again, staying safely at home in the A/C and cranking up the tube with the Boston folks live will not disappoint you!

Parker: Las Vegas & 4th of July
I think the biggest reason that Las Vegas doesn't go more all-out for Independence Day is because it is just too #@%&! hot! A 4th of July parade in 100+ degree heat would probably result in a body count.
The Fiesta used to join forces with Texas Station for a "Battle of the Alamo" fireworks display, but I think they discontinued that after Station took over Fiesta.
I spent 4th of July in the Stratosphere Tower a few years ago. There, one could watch several fireworks shows, although they are not as impressive as when they are going off over your head. It was also quite crowded.
I know that the lack of festivities is not due to a lack of patriotism. Last November I was most impressed (and more than a little moved) by the size and quality of the Veteran's Day Parade put on by the city.

LVBear584: Too crowded to go out of the house!

My plans are to stay in my house for four days, wandering outside only to go to the pool.
Casinos will be too crowded to "work," so may as well give myself a four-day weekend.

Thanks, Wildcard! I do have surround sound and a 57" (not plasma) HDTV, so that option sounds mighty good! Of course, with the time difference, I can watch that and still find some other fun.
Thanks,

If only the pool weren't a whole mile away! Actually, since the RGE offices will be closed that day, I think that's exactly how I'll spend a huge chunk of my day!

Ah, if only I could convince Viktor to do the same! I scoured today's paper looking for specials, but only found bingo and points specials. I was hoping for something on the tables, but nothing was advertised.
My SO once won us a free jacuzzi suite by winning with a K and Q of hearts during February (back in the Midwest), so I keep looking for promos like that. Most of the casinos here are probably too big for that kind of thing, though.
Thanks!

Bettie,
I was just about to post..."sorry, I forgot about the time zone difference". You of course picked up on it quickly.
Unfortunately it looks like the Boston weather will be marginal so you may want to check that out before settling in. They will more than likely hold the event anyway. However, if you are ever in Boston on the 4th...it is a thing to behold and should not be missed.
It's on A&E beginning at 7:30 eastern...I think the fireworks get cooking about 9 or 9:30. They last for a good 30 minutes.
Enjoy da show! With your tube and surround it should be excellent.
