Don Schlesinger: Read messages turning red
I need some help, please.
When you read a message, the title turns from red to gray. Mine are turning back to red after I read them! So, except for the fact that a "NEW" should appear next to new messages (but still doesn't always), I can't quickly see those posts that I've already read, because they don't stay gray.
I run Netscape 7.0 and my History is set to remember visited pages for 9 days and there are 50 pages in a session history. I have no idea if any of this matters.
Any help would be appreciated in getting the read, previously red, posts to stay gray!
Thanks.

Forty-seven readers and no proposed solutions!
Must really be a tough problem to solve.

Or maybe no one else has upgraded to Netscape 7.0 yet.

According to the stats for my website, last week only 5.7% of people hitting my site used Netscape. Nearly all of those used Netscape 4.7 or lower. You may be the only Netscape 7 user in the World

Well, I'm using a different (but related) browser (Moziilla) on a completely different operating system (Linux).
Furthermore, I have not personally experienced the problem at all. My completely wild-assed guess would be that somehow your browser history or cache is clearing itself. Other than checking your history and cache settings, I have no suggestions.

I can't win. After using 4.7 for years, I was berated (:-)) by certain people here for not being more "with it" and up-to-date. For one, the chat software didn't seem to work properly with 4.7, so I upgraded to 7.0. And, there were other problems.
You have to understand that this isn't a function of 4.7 or 7.0. The latter has worked perfectly fine for months and months. and now, this problem has surfaced. It's definitely something else.
Recently, I changed something having to do with the power settings (hard drive turning off after an hour and other such settings) in order to fix (which it did) a problem with a new HP 2200 all-in-one printer-scanner-copier-fax (which is great, by the way).
I wonder if that could have affected something.

I decided to clear my history, my disk cache, some other cache, and just about everything else you can clear.
We'll see what happens. :-)

Here we get 11% Netscape users, of whom 67% use 5.0 and higher.
We have one guy using Netscape 3.0. You know who you are.
We have a few (3 or 4) Opera users, 1 or 2 WebTV users, and one person who regularily accesses the site using a Dreamcast, which is an old Sega gaming system.
And 3.8% of our traffic comes from a Linux box. I think we all know who that is. (although based on volume he clearly isn't alone, there's other freaks out there as well).

haven't experienced that problem.

I think it matters. Set it to 30 days instead of 9.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Cacarulo

Have you tried Galeon? It's based on Mozilla with a ton of extra features.

I too, have great difficulty distinguishing between posts I'ved read and unread ones. The red looks almost the color of the ones I've read. My computer uses Internet Explorer if that has any bearing on the subject.

This is not the same problem. Try adjusting the brightness and contrast settings on your monitor.

A couple things to try - both may be longshots though. I don't use Netscape though (I use Galeon on Linux). From your preferences or options menu, see if there is an option for setting the color of visited links. Perhaps this is set to red on your browser (if your browser has this option).
Another possibity: perhaps the date on your computer got messed up. If so, then the browser may think the read link has expired beyond the 9 days even when it hadn't.
