BJinNJ: Double Down on X,A ?
If the count is very high, is this possible/advisable?
Would it cause a riot?
What would a dealer say/do?
Personally, X,A has always been an instant winner in my
mind, but one could look at X,A as an eleven, rather
than a BJ.
Just wondering. It's not on my BS table, or in my Mentor indices.
Probably a good reason for the apparent lapse of info??? LOL

Don Schlesinger: Oh, OK
I didn't see this post, as I started reading from the top down.
My answer is above.

BJinNJ: Don, My posts are moderated so...
I can't reply to my own posts. One source of confusion.
I just wondered if there might be any circumstance imaginable
that playing a natural as a soft 11 might be useful/profitable.
After thinking about it for a few moments, I decided that
the sure 3:2 payout must be better than a potential 2:1
payout for a double down, even if the casino allowed one to
double.
I think it was a post somewhere about split A,A that got me
thinking along these lines, and as you responded.
Thanks for your patient replies. I'll try to think before
posting in the future.

Take a few moments and register your username. Just click on "Create Profile" at the top of any message board index page. The only required information is a username and password. Everything else (e-mail address, additional info, etc.) is optional.
Once you have done this, I can turn off moderation and your posts will appear immediately. In addition, no one else will be able to post using your username, and you will be able to self-delete posts should you ever have the need.

The first correction to your post is your misunderstanding just what a double down is. It is still a 1/1 payout, you are just doubling your bet but you will paid 1/1 on the doubled amount.
What this means is that instead of excepting a 3/2 payout where you have absolutely no risk when you get to the point of even thinking about doubling (the dealer does not have a natural), you are thinking about going from no risk to double your original risk for a possible payout of only 33% more.
I can not think of a worse possible bet.

BJinNJ: You're right, thanks.
Back to the BS/I18 tables, and to CV Drills.

BJinNJ: Should have started reading...
Griffin's "Theory of Blackjack", ed. 6 before posting this topic.
The poem beginning Chapter 2 is quite good and topical.
Over and out!

It would seem to me that at some point, perhaps with no aces left in a DD game and a true count of say +15 it would be a higher EV play to double 10,A vs dealer 6-up than to take the 3:2 sure thing. (There's got to be an indice I would think.) Of course, that's the mathmatical part of the play. Doing it without getting two security guys and the shift manager standing behind you within 10 minutes is another matter.
