    Neko: Stupid me!

Recently went to 1D heaven. In 12 hours of play spread over 4 days, I lost $4,500 using Norm's REKO count and his recommended spread for 1D ($150 big bet). This is the first time I used it in a casino. This is also the first time I had played bj in about a year.

I wanted a simpler count because I play so infrequently now, so about 8 months ago I decided to switch to REKO. Practiced diligently at first until I was familiar with it, then did not practice for months. Unfortunately, the decision for the trip was on the spur of the moment, and all I did for preparation was to review the indexes and bet ramp.

After getting creamed for the first 3 days (every session was a losing one except one, when I won $500), I decided to review my REKO chart again. That is when I discovered that I had been using -0- for the IRC, instead of -1! The last day I did it correctly but still managed to lose about $200. This means that my total loss using the wrong IRC was $4,300, in about 9 hours of play.

My question is, would that one point erroneous IRC make that much of a difference in my loss? Is it within even 3 SD?

After getting back from that disastrous trip, I dredged up my long unused CVBJ and played the same game as on the trip. After 8 hours, I'm up over $2,000. Maybe I should stick to the software!

    Neko: Game was

1D, D10, H17, NRA, rule of 7. Played with two other players at the most, but mostly one other or one on one.

No it wouldn't damage the results that much. More likely months without playing or practice. And/or just bad luck.

Norm Wattenberger: Rule of 7 and standard deviation

Increased penetration at single deck does wonders for SCORE. But, it also dramatically increases standard deviation. Incrementing the IRC would further increase standard deviation by increasing the average bet. So although the SCORE wasn't damaged all that much by using the incorrect IRC, your standard deviation was very high.

I think it was a combination of both bad luck and lack of practice. I found that I was making counting errors playing CVBJ. I had it set at a very high dealer speed and had to to cut back. Still, the lower speed was much faster than any live game.

There was one positive note on the trip. I played a lot of poker in between bj sessions, and ended up winning back some of my bj losses.

Thanks for your reply and observations.
