    zahmed: Conditions in Reno/Tahoe

Since I live in the Northweast, wondering if its worth it to fly to Reno (cheap airline ticket available). How are conditions there?

Way back in the 1980's, there was a lot of single deck and decent games available there.

It depends on what you mean by "worth it", and what part of the Northwest you are from.

If you compare the EV potential of the Reno/Tahoe area to certain parts of the Northwest, the added EV will not cover your trip expenses IMHO. The problem is that it is difficult to get over a certain betting level in Reno while still using a decent spread. The result is a maximum EV that is only a little bit higher than your max EV in certain parts of the NW.

Hope this helps. I am only familiar with certain sections of the NW, and am using those games as my base line for comparison. If you need more detail, then please e-mail me.

I live in the Northeast, not Northwest. I prefer single and DD games. In LV, I play primarily downtown. I only play reds and expect to earn enough (say $500) over some 35 hours of playing time.

My question is/was about conditions in the Reno area.

I misunderstood your original question. I thought you were asking whether the games in Reno were sufficiently better than your local games to justify the trip (considering travel costs, etc). That would require an analysis of games in both Reno and the Northwest. By gentlemen's agreement, Northwest players are very reluctant to share game info on open boards, but are very generous via e-mail. Hence, my response.

Now, to your real question. I will ignore the comparison aspect since I have no clue about games in the Northeast other than the persistent rumors that they are really bad.

If you like downtown LV, then you will love Reno. Forget the DD games and only play SD. There are a number of great SD games in Reno.

I can't directly answer your question of whether you will get $500 EV in 35 hours because I do not know your max bet. Assuming that you can only afford to spread $5-$20, then this will be very difficult. However, if you can spread up to $30 or $40, then it will be alot easier. If your max bet is less than $75 or so, then you will also be able to get away with alot more in terms of spread. Unfortunately $5 mins are the norm at alot of places (you will find $3 mins at the smaller places). If your spread is limited by the min, then you will have a harder time making decent EV.

With a $30 max bet, using my preferred plan of attack, I would get EV of $21 per 100 hands or somewhere on the order of $735 in 35 hours. With a $40 max bet, I would get $30 per 100 hands or a little over $1K in 35 hours.

If you provide a BR and ROR tolerance then I can give you more detailed advice, including the best places to play and suggested bet ramps. Alternatively, you could just specify your max bet. I would be more comfortable providing this info via e-mail instead of this forum.

$500 in 35 hours works out to nearly 3 units per hour (assuming $5 unit), which is pretty ambitious.

However, if it is doable anywhere, Reno would be the place. For the red chip player, Reno is about As Good As It Gets. Nearly every casino offers single deck games, and penetration is generally better than Las Vegas.

However, big spreads will draw heat, even at red chip levels, especially in the smaller places.

How far is Reno from Vegas, and how to get there?
    Is there a bus?

How to get there: Go to the Southwest terminal at McCarran Intl Airport. Buy a ticket and get on the appropriate 737. You'll be there in an hour or so.

It is roughly 450 miles from Las Vegas to Reno. Furthermore, the route crosses some of the most desolate, godforsaken country to be found anywhere on the planet. You cover miles of nothing but, well, miles, only to come to some little town in the middle of nowhere that will leave you scratching your head wondering why on earth anyone would want to live there.

Even Greyhound refuses to go there. You can take a Greyhound bus from Las Vegas to Reno, but it will take you 19 hours or more. Why? Because your rounte will take you by way of California, going west to Barstow, then up central CA to Sacramento (where you can stop for a quick run for governor), and then back east to Reno.
