For index plays, the couple books that i've read say to stay on 15 against dealer 10 when the deck is hot. I'm wondering do you also stay on 15 against dealer 7,8,9 at this time? what do most do?
When the deck is "hot"? What does that even mean?
If allowed, you would surrender the 15v10. Then hit, unless you're at the index to stay.
You do the same for 7, 8, 9. Are you at the index to surrender? To stay?
When you look at long term EV it assumes you are making these index plays as you simmed them.
You would never deviate intentionally, regardless if the shoe is hot, the dealer isn't busting, or any other nonsense.
Hit 15 v 7,8,9. Only stand v 10 when you're at index to do so. The index 15 v 10 only applies against a dealer 10, no other card. If you have an index against a 9, like 15 v 9, then it only applies when the dealer has 9. If you do not have an index, always do basic strategy which is hit.

To win you not only have to not bust but you need to beat the dealers total if he doesn't bust. The dealer's most likely total is what he has with a T in the hole for 7 thru T. So for a T up your most often trying to beat or tie a total of 20. For 9, 8 and 7 you are most often trying to beat totals of 19, 18, and 17 respectively. As the most likely total you have to beat gets lower hitting is a stronger option and needs a higher count to overcome the more likely win when hitting. So you would need a higher count to stand for 7 than 8 than 9 than T. If you don't know the correct index then default to BS. If there is no index in your reference for these index plays then the author decided either to not include all the indices or that some were not worth including or simply no index exists for the count you are using. The former is unlikely, but the index may be a count you will very rarely or never see, which is pretty much the same thing.
