Bottomline, I have a stated goal of earning $10-$15 grand a year playing recreationally and I get there every year.
Yes, I started out with a shoebox of $15k, the BR crossed $70k this month, I play rated (a no, no), getting on OSN has not been as devastating as claimed here, never having simmed anything, not using software (CVCX, etc), not practicing counting in 3 years (probably cannot count a deck down in 45 seconds), never networking (claimed essential here), never attempting higher level counts, bins and all, I have gotten by. I could not tell you what NO is, what SCORE is. I still make mistakes, some intentionally and it works for me. Many cannot stand it.
I use HiLo, the I-18 and beyond that a few more deviations.
According to sims, Zee should be making well over $80/hour using his spread and playing the games he plays with Hilo. His hourly is about 1/3rd of what it should be. His lack of practice probably has him making many counting mistakes. His not using TC bins means he is just guessing what to bet and how to play hands. His not understanding the concepts of SCORE//N0 (n-zero not n-o) shows he doesn't understand just how bad the games he is forced to play because he is in OSN really are. A pro would only play them if he got away with a really huge spread. With software to sim things (which he said he purchased many years ago but apparently never bothered to learn to use since it took too much effort for him) he would know just how bad his results are and that they are not something to be proud of but rather something to stop playing altogether until you figure out why you are coming in under half of your expected win. He is so clueless that he speaks proudly of extremely poor results that would have someone that spent time learning rather than playing stop playing to figure out what the problem is. Newbies, Zee is telling you his results proudly, like they should be followed or emulated, but the experts are telling you that his results are more than disturbingly poor and to the point of stop playing until you figure out what you are doing wrong. Zee is just too clueless to know his results are something to be ashamed of for his stakes and time playing every year. Shame on Zee for not understanding how bad his results actually are. And shame on Zee for trying to make others into extremely bad counters. If you are going to do something then do it right. Don't barely put any effort into doing something that is an art form as much as a science. You will have the horrible results that Zee is describing.
Newbies beware, Zee is someone you want to use as an example of how to do everything wrong. He is a reverse barometer of what you should do.
Yeah, it's cool to be a pro and all but I also admire Zee's realness. Not everyone wants to be a pro or put in pro hours/effort. Not everyone is a math genius. Some are okay doing exactly what Zee does. He's not recommending his approach to others; he's simply stating what works for him and what he's comfortable with. I'm a little like Zee in some ways. I have other things going on and I'm okay not fully utilizing every source of data, high-level count, or index.
Zee, out of curiosity, which other deviations do you use besides I18, and why?
I thought this warrants repeating.
You're missing the point. I've been doing this a long time and have met a lot of APs (both full-time and recreational or part-time). Most who get into this, find it intellectually challenging, stimulating, and want to do the basics as part of the learning process - read books, run their own sims, etc. Being a math genius is not necessary; having some math aptitude is helpful.
OTOH, there are some who having gambling addictions, want to be spoon fed, and while they may have some positive variance at times, are deluding themselves into believing they're playing a winning game. Some are satisfied living life with laziness and mediocrity. People like that can't be helped and rarely are successes. It's like trying to explain what red is to a colorblind person. There's no such thing as a free lunch.
Why can't he be playing a winning game just because it's not AS winning as you require yours to be? If he's happy with his 40/hr or whatever, then let him be. I haven't read anything from him that leads me to believe he's playing a losing game. I, too, do not have the mental fortitude or math ability to be a pro. I'm okay with my game as well, even though some may yell at me "YOU CAN'T BEAT A 6 or 8 DECK SHOE WITH THAT SPREAD!" But what they really mean is "it wouldn't be worth MY time to play that."
You haven't read enough, then. For years he's been posting about his playing errors, under-betting out of fear, doubling for less, etc. Unless these posts were simply for the troll effect he thrives on, he can't possibly be playing a winning game.
No, there's a difference. If you want to play a minimum wage game, that's certainly your option. However, if you can learn a 6 word phrase, there's a way to earn the same money without the variance.
That phrase is:
No, a game worth a few times minimum wage may not be good enough for some here but may be just fine for others who enjoy playing recreationally and like the idea of beating casinos at their own game. I haven't seen his errors; I've only seen what he says is his game, and it looks fine to me. Even with those errors, he's probably playing a winning game. By what margin? Who knows. He's obviously not trying to be a pro and he doesn't want to deal with the stress that comes with playing very seriously. And that's fine. Some people on here need to lighten up. If someone's game isn't as strong as yours (or not even close), it's not an affront to you.
Plus, not everyone is adept at using a deep fryer.
And taxes.
And not everyone looks good in a red visor.
So very true. There's one game where I spread 5$-40$ on a 6D H17 DAS RSA 75% pen shoe. My hourly is less than minimum wage, but I'm very happy to play it. Is my game perfect? No. I can't true count to save my life lol. I like to think I play better than Zee, but I'm certainly no Don either. I'm still very much a winning player and I'm content with my game.
Zee doesn't play optimally, but I believe he has a winning game. Good for him.
