Who watched history being made today. The UMBC retrievers beat the number 1 seed Virginia by 20 points. The first time a 16 seed has nocked out a number 1 seed in the history of the tournament. Will they go all the way.

Nice little commuter school - I live 20 mins from the campus. Their gym space is not much better than a decent High School's. They really are known to be a commuter school not much to speak of in Re on campus housing. - known for technology and their chess team!!! Yes, Chess team. They recruit heavily for those folks - as much if not more than their athletic department
I don't know much about UMBC but I used to work at a think tank about a mile away. I would go watch the dogs being trained at the K9 training center for police dogs during lunch (when the whether was nice) which was basically on campus though technically off campus. It is a nice campus.
Three - sound s line we may be relative neighbors - any chance you would consider mentoring on a limited scale? I would pay for your time and nothing would be set in stone - there would either be mutual benefit or we would not do it AND...Absolutely no pressure on you whatsoever - I understand the value if anonymity
T3 and Don S. I sat by a nice old gent watching the NCAA tourney yesterday. He told me he had a friend in LV who bet $25K on Michigan at 40 to 1 to win it all back in January. Bullshit? Perhaps. At least that is how my mind naturally works.
If not, his friend stands to either lose $25k on Monday or he wins a million. My friend on the other side quickly mentioned the guy should back up his bet. Then we went back to watching the game. But today, when everyone is bored, it will be a topic of discussion.
What would you do? Might be an interesting forum discussion as well.
Only a $100K? My thought was how many sportsbooks could he bet in LV and stay under the $10k threshold. And how many will take a bet of even $10k? William Hill accounts for most I think. Plus it's Sunday. No less Easter. So he's got to get his hands on some cash. Assuming he doesn't have bricks laying around his house. Plus an early start limits his time tomorrow. Interesting situation.

Unfortunately, Nova is a big favorite, and the money line is about -320. If he bets $780,000 on Nova to win $244,000, he locks in about $220,000, no matter who wins. As you say, tough to come up with the cash on such short notice, but I'd do what I could to hedge it, because he isn't going to win that first bet. Depends on how important $220,000 is to him. That's a decent payoff for most people, and knowing it's yours BEFORE the game tips off is rather compelling, no?

Good point Don. He'd need about 11 bricks and then getting enough casinos to take his bet. Perhaps the more lucrative idea would have been some parlays once Michigan reached the final four. If I could think on my feet as quick as you there may be some money made in just listening to sportsbook scuttlebutt.
That's why I picked $100K. It would lock in a small profit if he lost the Michigan wager. Plus a guy that can come up with $25K to to have sit idle for a couple months, while riding on a long shot, can probably come up with $100K and find enough places to take pieces of the action to easily make the wager.
Bets like this aren't all that rare. And, they can be negotiated. I can tell you that, if I were ever in such a situation, I wouldn't bet $100,000, just to win six grand if Nova wins. You make a bet like the original one, and you get your team to the final, you're a schmuck if you don't walk away with big bucks.

I've noticed Greed and Fear drives sportsbook bettors. Greed before they buy the ticket. Fear after they own the ticket. Now for a guy that is strictly a value investor, he could "feed" off those two emotions. For instance, one of the rhymes I repeat to myself on a hockey bet that I rarely watch is Better Team, Home Ice, Great Price.
A savvy investor could make some money on busy weekends in buying tickets for pennies on the dollar and end up on both sides purely by reading peoples emotions.
