As of a couple of weeks ago, there is still plenty of playable blackjack at all stakes in the Reno area, though it is a tiny fraction of what was there five or ten years ago.

I wouldn't say GSR is unfriendly, but they backed me off quick. I played one fairly short session and got backed off on my next visit by the 2nd shuffle. I never played rated or showed ID ANYWHERE in town and they addressed me by name. It's apparent GSR is a database participant.
I've gotten accustomed to this, especially in stores that are within a 4 to 8 hr radius of my house. But I was caught off guard in Reno, considering my distance away from home and the fact that I was driving a rental. But I've also encountered similar occurrences in Vegas strip casinos as well.
The scrutiny one receives when playing unrated is so significantly greater than playing rated. So much so, and because I was unaccustomed to such heat as found in Las Vegas, I started taking out a handful of players cards, along with a room key from MGM, select the card of the particular casino (I think their knowing I play rated everywhere and seeing all those cards helps)and they allowed me to play without hovering around or paying attention to my play. I think that if you conceal your spread well, keep a low spread, be okay with small wins and small sessions, it might make more sense to play with a players card these days. So many ploppies play with a card that it just might be a sign pof a card counter if one refuses a card.
