New member, wanted to say hello and tell a little bit about myself.

    Hello everyone!

I'm a new kid on the block; I've been researching counting cards for about 6 months now and decided to jump into the forums. Any advice is welcome and I hope that once I get some actual experience I'll be able to do my part for this community. Some background on me would be I'm in the south US and primarily am trying to learn the Zen count. I know HiLo very well, I currently use I18 indexes and Wong out (True count -1) when I do play. My normal game is $5 min 6D 75% penetration S17 DAO DAS LS. I don't really have an adequate bankroll to count properly but I like to practice in live conditions. This was mainly just supposed to be an introduction so thank you for your time and may the variance swing your way gentlemen and ladies.

    Drewster.

    Welcome Drewster -

First piece of advice that we give any newer player is get Casino Verite practice software. It will greatly accelerate your proficiency in counting. Live play is important too, but I would say that you should be 80% practice and 20% play until you get the counting on autopilot...

Ahh yes that wonderful piece of software from Mr. Norm. I'm currently using the trial version at the moment but will be upgrading soon. Would you recommend just going straight ahead and also getting the sim software as well or wait on it? Thanks again.

You will eventually want the sim software, but it's not absolutely necessary at first. You can use "CVCX online". It's in the "Resources" section of this site. It will give you the basics re: SCORE and spread that you need for the various games.

Welcome Drewster. You are in a very similar boat as myself. I'm South US, play Hi-Lo currently but working on getting Zen down, and have started about 6 months ago. Similar bankroll aspect as well. Basically I have a replenishable 1k trip roll. However, once I'm completely confident in my skills, I have a means and intention to acquire roughly 20k. I purchased CVBJ first, and very recently purchased CVCX. I'd recommend going with both now more so than later. I spent a good while running sims with different counts and my rotation shops' rules in order to really compare the benefits I'd be getting by switching from Hi-Lo. What is your current goal? I have a fairly convenient work schedule that allows me to play almost as often as I'd like while still paying my bills.

The amount of knowledge here is priceless. Use it to your advantage. It's not every day you come across such easy access to picking the minds of professionals. Also, make sure to pick up a copy of Don's Blackjack Attack.

Welcome . Zen is a fun count. I suggest looking into the full deck indices, not the quarter deck ones in the current book. I hope you enjoy it here. I agree with Bigdaddy about the software. I don't have an adequate BR to count properly either, but mine in replenishable. If I lose it all, I can have it back in a paycheck or two so I don't sweat it. Practicing in a live game before you're ready can be fun, but it does cost some in both variance and mistakes. Sometimes it is more cost effective to use software and/or a pack of cards. I cut most of my teeth in a casino too, but I had the disposable income to do it. Even so, I've still needed casino verite to polish up a few things.

I would say my current goal is to become a better blackjack player and turn my hobby into something that'll pay for itself if not a little bit extra. I hate losing and am very competitive so I'm trying to do my best to not give the casinos my money. Other goals would be to introduce this whole concept of counting to people who are genuinely interested/curious and to help stop the propagation of silly gambling myths. A very far off goal would be to possibly try to move into more profitable avenues of advantage play in the future if I get tired of counting.

I managed to find Snyder's indices for true count per deck on his forum. But thank you for the warning, I really wish Snyder would update his Black Belt in Blackjack to a new addition.
