    Las Vegas Apartments

How are the entry level apartments in Las vegas off-strip? The ones from about 500-700/month? Im looking to move there by the end of the year or beginning of next year. Do most of them have ethernet ports on the wall so I can plug in my laptop or video game console or is it just wifi available?

Please any Las Vegas residents, let me know the status of these off strip apartments.

My thoughts immediately ran to ... "Where does ZenKinG currently reside?"

In moving to Las Vegas, [irrespective of their rapidly declining state of BJ],

he may be changing his residence for the worse or for the better, but the odds

are in favor of the former. For me it would be very depressing indeed.

Rather than pay $700 or $750 near the strip you'd be better off paying $750 or $850 in Henderson. There are basically four options for Apartment living in Las Vegas.

    1. The areas on either side of the strip (and the UNLV Area)- Has lots of cheaper apartments but pockets of crime and "iffy" neighbors and partying students
    2. North Las Vegas-Higher crime
    3. Summerlin-Newest part of town, immaculate planned community, more expensive but super nice.
    4. Henderson/Green Valley-planned communities but a bit older and a good bit less expensive than Summerlin but very safe. Both 3 & 4 have great parks and a nice standard of living. (plus lots of 24hr food options).

Get a crime map of the LV Valley online and avoid the pockets of crime and avoid any apartment complex that has the slightest bit of exterior run down looks. If they're run down on the outside they'll be horrible on the inside. If you pay $600 a month for a total dump in a high crime area you'll regret it the first time your car gets broken into or your neighbors have a gun battle or when you begin to have second thoughts about bringing a bag of trash to the dumpster when it's dark. You want to feel completely safe when you come and go at 3am.

Henderson gets my choice, lots of apartment capacity in the $700 to $900 price range (one bedroom) or $800-$1000 range (two bedroom). Lots of research tools online, use them and then ask your Las Vegas friends what they know. It goes without saying the tradeoff of Summerlin and Henderson is distance from the strip, but IMHO once you live here that distance is a good thing...besides I'm still only about 15-20 minutes from the Strip.

I'll add there are also some newer communities on the far southwest side and what are called the "Southern Highlands" out by M and Southpoint.

What Vegas has in it's favor
    1. Great transportation hub (airlines)
    2. Close to other gaming jurisdictions (California, Reno, Wendover, Arizona, New Mexico are all within driving distance)
    3. Center of the gaming universe for networking
    4. Lots of casinos = lots of other AP options for doing things like couponing which aren't based on the game of 21
    5. Several times a year casino promotions arise that are exceedingly profitable.
    6. Cheap cost of living
    7. 24/7 Free Food and booze
    8. Lots of entertainment options (often comped)

It is exceedingly easy to make $50K per year with a small bankroll in Vegas with very little to no effort if you plan smartly.

A couple of strong (as usual) and very useful posts by bigplayer. I just want to +1 that idea that distance to the strip is a very good thing. For those of us that live here, the strip IS NOT the center of things. The local's type casinos are!

If you are a young person, relocating here, there is the novelty and excitement of the strip and clubs and all that. But that wears thin pretty quickly. And that atmosphere is counter-productive to an AP lifestyle.

#4 and #5 obviously fold into bigplayers conclusion that it is easy to make 50k here with very little effort. This is kind of hard for people from other places to understand but once you live here you find it.....actually it almost finds you.

This all sounds wonderful but what about the water shortage?

This is Nevada, not California. We don't have a water shortage.

I think this is a good thread, and BP has been very helpful. Can't understand why someone would rate the OP negative.

Yes, meanwhile a post like "you can rent a room from KJ", which obviously isn't meant to be helpful, gets a 'helpful rating'.

I am not offended by it BTW. I guess an attempt at humor??? I don't know. I just don't understand the helpful rating. I have said before, I don't think the 'helpful rating' feature is being used as you intended, Norm.

There is one piece of advice to anyone relocating to Vegas. There are probably a hundred different 'weekly' type apartment complexes located throughout Vegas, two of the most common being Siegle Suites and Budget Suites. They offer furnished units of various sizes starting from an advertised price of $179/wk. Stay away from these even for a temporary stay while you get acquainted with the city and look for something else.

First the price is misleading because there is tax added on and it's not just the 8% sales tax, there is additional hotel type taxes that push this rate to well over $225 week. By Nevada law, the first 30 days are treated like a hotel and you pay tax. You don't have to pay tax after 30 days.

But most importantly these places are almost all really bad places, in bad neighborhoods with very undesirable residents. Lots of drugs, crime and transient people that continually move around between these places. Lots of police activity. Just watch an episode of COPS filmed in Vegas and you are likely to see one of these establishments.

I have found that it is overwhelmingly used in a positive manner. There are a couple members misusing it.
