You negotiate a sales price first then you spring the trade in value of your car or special financing to keep the deal alive. Do it near the end of the month. Be prepared to walk out and have them call you later to accept your terms after seeing if you found something better. You did find an attractive offer but haven't finalized the deal yet whether that is true or not. Te idea is to get the best deal possible for each piece of your deal. Wy would you but a car from a dealer if it weren't for getting top dollar on your trade in? Why would you buy a car from a dealer except to get 0% financing deal. At each point what you negatiated already is now non-negotiable. You will end up with a great deal on your car, outstanding trade in value and dream financing terms. Some dealers are looking for suckers and you won't even get a good deal. Just walk out as that place is a waste of time. You want a high volume outfit that wants to sell lots of vehicles rather than make a large profit on each sale. They pay inventory taxes or some kind of fee for unsold vehicles at the close of each month so if they don't sell the car before the tax is assessed it costs them money. At that point you have the leverage. Find out the dealers cost and con't pay more than $100 more than that less any incentives the dealer gets of course.
Discover is now giving 5% on switching categories. Amex gives impressive givebacks, assuming you pump through a fair amount. There often exist good deals. But, they don't last long.

Well on the point of credit card reward tricks, if you REALLY want to be safe in the "long run" which most everyone seems to be here, the new card by Citi, which is their double rewards card actually pays you back 2% on EVERYTHING. No changing categories; no fee; no initial bonus however. 1% on purchase; 1% on payback. So in the long run IF you use it for EVERYTHING you should come out ahead. But if you really want to maximize credit card rewards, let me refer you all to:

This guy keeps ON top of things. AND he has an app you can download to smartphone that if you enter all your cc information, it will tell you the right card to use for EVERY purchase based upon maximizing your rewards. Is that an AP play for credit cards per chance? LOL
