orster52: Spanish 21 Hole Card Charts

I've created hole card charts for Spanish 21,H17,DDD and for Spanish 21,S17, and for Spanish 21,H17. I've compared them to the regular blackjack hole card charts for the 6D,H17,DAS,LS,RSA game and the 6D,S17,DAS,LS,RSA game. Lower case indicates a change from the regular blackjack hole card game.

In spanish 21 it is possible to redouble, for example 7-12, dealt a 4, and then redouble is correct. This is not available in regular blackjack.

    5. A9-13S;A9-14S;1010-13S;1010-14S. The dealer bust rates in regular blackjack are higher for 13(52.0%) and 14(55.4%). EV for A9-13S,1010-13S is +.682. EV for D,P is +.587. EV for A9-14S,1010-14S is +.707. EV for D.P is +.695.

    6. 15-19H. EV for His -.47. EV for H is -.543 if you don't H 17+.

    7. A8-20H. EV for H is -.485.

    A7-20H. EV for H is -.461.

    8. AA-18;AA-19;AA-20. In spanish 21 you can resplit and hit split aces, which encourages the split.

    9. 16-AAH;16-A@H;15-AAH;15-A2H;14-A2H;14-A3H;13-A5H. Spanish 21 dealer bust rates are AA(22.0%),A2(24.6%),A3(27.2%),A4(29.0%),A5(32.7%), A6(21.2%). Regular blackjack dealer bust rates are AA(26.7%),A2(29.3%),A3(31.9%),A4(34.5%),A5(37.0%), A6(21.2%). So in spanish 21 the delaer busts less than regular blackjack. R is better than S for AA and A2 because the bust rate is less than 25%.

    10. 9-A5D. Spanish 21 basic strategy is 9-3D with dealer bust rate of 33.8%. A5 bust rate is 32.7%. 9-2H is basic strategy instead of D when the bust rate is 31.9%. 9-A5D is regular blackjack basic strategy for 2D,H17,DAS,RSA but is H for 6D. In spanish 21 you can double 9 if dealt a 2.

    13. 66-A4H. 66-3H is basic strategy with a bust rate of 33.8%. A4(29.9%) is less.

    14. 8-19H. EV for H is -.358.

    16. 11-11H. EV for D is +.030.

    17. A7-11S. EV is -.204.

    18. 44-5D;44-6D is spanish 21 basic strategy instead of P as in regular blackjack.

Comments 6D,S17 as different from regular blackjack:

    1. 13-4H;13-5H;13-6H;12-4H;12-5H;12-6H;9-4H;9-5H;A5-4H;A5-5H;A4-4H;A4-5H;A4-6H;A3-5H;A3-6H;A2-5H;A2-6H;44-5H;44-6H;16-9H;16-10H;15-10H;15-AH;14-10H;14-AH;13-AH;10-9H;A7-AH;88-10P;77-10H;77-AH;22-8P are spanish 21 basic strategy decisions.

    2. 9-12D;8-12H;7-13H;7-14H; 6-14H;6-15H,6-16H;5-14H;5-15H;5-16H. In the S17 game you can't redouble if a small card is dealt so the play is changed. EV for 9-12D is +.201. EV for H is +.161. EV for 8-12D is -.004. EV for 8-13D is +.237. EV for H is +.194. EV for 7-15H is +.335. EV for D is +.285. 7-16D EV is +.417. EV for H is +.390. 6-16H EV is +.416. EV for D is +.177.

    3. 16-AAH;16-A2H;16-A3H;15-AAH;15-A2H;15-A3H;14-A3H;13-A5H. 16-AAH EV is -.49. The S17 dealer bust rates are AA(19.4%);A2(22.2%);A3(24.0%);A4(28.0%),A5(30.9%). It is better to R than to S against AA,A2,A3 because the bust rates are less than 25%.

    4. A7-A5H. A7-3S is basic strategy with bust rate of 33.8%. A5 bust rate is 30.9%.

    5. A2-12D. EV is +.201.

    A5-12D. EV is +.201. EV for H is +.150.

    A7-12D. EV for S is +.197

    A8-12S. EV is +.426. EV for D is +.393.

    A8-13D. EV is +.517. EV for H is +.470.

    6. 99-A4S;99-A5S. Basic strategy is 99-2S with bust rate of 31.9%. A5(30.9%) and A4(28.0%) bust rates are less.

    7. 66-A5H. Basic strategy is 66-3H with bust rate of 33.8%. A5(30.9%) bust rate is less.

The above charts are best for the exposed card situation where the dealer just turns over her card for the table to see. In the hole card game, where the exposure is unknown to the dealer, you will probably modify the above charts in order to maintain the game. Are you really going to surrender 19-20R and like plays? It looks odd to hit hard 17 and above.

    Good luck.

I typed 9-A5D for the H17,DDD game. It should be 9-A5H. EV for D is -.03 for the H17 game and -.08 for the S17 game.

My charts are nicely aligned when I transmit them but get jumbled as the electrons tire along the way to Don's site.

It would be great to have someone else do analysis on these charts. I only created them because nobody else did and I was getting lots of exposed card situations. Then there were players who didn't want me to post the charts as it might help ruin their games. Since spanish 21 is getting harder as heat increases and as dealers get better at dealing it I felt it was okay to go ahead and post.

Lenny Frome did the pioneer work on the game with his basic strategy in 1996. The Wizard Of Odds built on Frome's work and perfected the basic strategy in 2001. Kat Walker did her landmark work in 2008 to create indices for the games. My charts are the only ones for hole cards.

    Good luck.

A7-11H is correct in all my charts. I have A7-11S. EV for H is -.161 and EV for H is -.2037.

It is good to know there are other charts. I never found any or I wouldn't have crunched the numbers for mine. I'm usually too lazy to do the work.

Would you post about any errors in mine please?

    Thanks. Good luck.

I haven't done anything with BJ switch. Switch isn't offered at enough places for me to get off my lazy keister and learn it. It also isn't offered in my state. Only .18% casino advantage is an enticement though. I want it to expand before I expend any effort.

I read you did hole card charts for spanish 21. If you see any errors in mine please post the corrections. Thanks.

Brock Windsor: Re: Spanish 21 Hole Card Charts

I amended my charts to reflect yours. I was using a best guess approach based on BJ charts I have and some conversation with others. We had similar decision points though I wasn't splitting aces against pat hands, obviously an error. It makes me believe that in the joints that allow hitting split aces in BJ, one should split vs. dealer pat hands. The BJSwitch .18% is misleading, I doubt anyone has memorized a switching strategy that gets them inside 0.5%. Then for HC that strategy has to be amended for hole card knowledge. I think Ive misplayed hands vs a dealer 12 to the point I have no advantage, Im back to the drawing board on this game right now so any insight is appreciated.

The hole card charts are used for when the dealer exposes her hole card before she is supposed to. You then have additional information that you can use to better play your hand.

Mr. X: Call me Crazy, but here's my 2 cents Brock

Although an obvious rule of thumb is that BJ games with special options are better for the holecarder, BJ Switch is an exception. BJ Switch is a below average game for holecarders, imo.
No computer studies on my part, but experience and logic have opened my eyes to 'Switch' HC problems. IMO, you are exagerrating the frequency and value of HC info when it comes to the actual 'switch'.
3 problems that cause EV dilution for us in BJS:
    1. Switching is overwhelmingly determined by the players 4 cards. Unfortunately, the dealers holecard rarely matters. I'd guess 1-2% of the time does the holecard change the switch decision, probably closer to 1%. Heck, maybe BELOW 1%.
    2. The 'Dealer 22 ties' rule dilutes the value of staying on stiffs vs dealer high card stiffs, and that's a large chunk of your advangtage.
    3. Switching turns a lot of hands where HC knowledge has value into nobrainers where HC knowledge does NOT have value. E.G., a player's 5, 10 and 10, 3 vs dealer 9 up 6 down. Without switching, staying on 15 and 13 vs 15 as opposed to hitting is worth about 50% and 40% of your unit, respectively (before the 'dealer 22 ties' dilution). But switching turns that into a 20 and an 8, where the holecard knowledge is of no value (unless the 8 turns stiff.)
If you want, this could be continued on that other site, where I'm known by a different name (in addition to 'lightweight')

Brock Windsor: Re: Call me Crazy, but here's my 2 cents Brock

In your example I would double the 8 and split the 10's, that hole card knowledge was valuable. The '22' ties rule is very problematic, it dilutes the value of aggressive splits and doubles as well as value of staying on stiffs, no doubt this is the biggest hurdle. I think the dealer hole card matters a great deal in the switch decision, not only in how often you create action against a dealer stiff, but also in breaking up losing pat hands so you can hit them without raising the pit's eye. For instance dealer has 9 up 10 down. Switch your 7-6, T8, for a 15 and 16 and hit them both. It won't raise attention like hitting an 18 would. I haven't had time to work on this game thoroughly, but it's in the project list.
