Norm Wattenberger: Number of cards used per hand

I thought I'd look more deeply into this question:

Don Schlesinger: Stand of soft 17?

    Lovely work, as usual.

Curious as to how much the higher-than-I-expected 2.93 for the dealer would drop if you had used S17 instead of H17.

It wasn't enough to show up in the chart. The numbers were remarkably stable based on rule variations.

But, clearly, the dealer gets a soft 17 frequently enough so that hitting it gives him an extra 0.20% edge over the player, which is far from trivial.

And, each time that he gets it and hits it, it adds a minimum of one more card to his hand, and, obviously, often, more than one. That particular rule HAS to make a difference in the average, particularly with several players at the table where it is almost certain that the dealer will complete his hand.

I get a difference of .01 card with one player and .004 card with five players.
