    Wildcard: caveat on comp mailers

Recent play in Reno and Tunica have generated many freebies to my mailbox. If you get some of these, it is imperative to read the "mice type", otherwise you could get bitten...big time.

I kinda camped out for a few hours at the Grand in Tunica, perhaps averaging $100+ per hand. The mailer I got included airfare from Atlanta for two, and two nights at the Grand. When you read the mice type, statements like "Flight dates and times subject to change, or cancellation, at sole discretion of casino property manager". Additionally, "If a cancellation is made within 14 days prior to departure, a guest is a no-show or cancels on the date of departure, regardless of circumstances, the full package price will be charged".

I just got one from the Atlantis in the Bahamas, (never been there), which included airfare, blah, blah. Decided to read the fine print, which clearly states that the comp is based upon action at the casino, and if you don't reach their comp level, you will be charged for the entire trip.

I hated to pass on the Mirage and Bellagio comps, but I just couldn't get away.

So, before you get too excited about these things, do yourself a HUGE favor, read the mice type.

    There ain't no free lunch.

    Parker: More comp stuff

One should definitely always read the fine print.

It is usually necessary to provide a credit card number when reserving a room comp. A no-show or cancellation without adequate notice (typically 2-3 days, more on special promotions - again, read the fine print) may result in the hotel charging the credit card for one night's stay at full rack rate.

Casinos that use a comp point system may deduct comp points for "free" rooms offered in mailers, resulting in a negative comp point balance. This means no food comps until they see a lot of action.

In this case, some hosts may advise simply charging everything to the room, and "we'll take care of everything when you check out." Again, a charge may result if the action is less than anticipated.
