Gorgon: horizontal spread
I took the advice offered in BJA III about spreading to two hands at 75% of my top bet when the count was right. This was in double deck and within 15 minutes I was flat bet. If this is a normal occurence, then it would seem the advice is faulty eventhough it was "heartily recommended."

Norm Wattenberger: Re: horizontal spread
Whether or not you are "flat bet" depends on many variables. Among them your unit size, your spread, your play, jumping bets, the casino, time spent at the casino, other players, and your act which in itself is a set of additional variables. The casino doesn't take measures against you based on one action in isolation.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but I never, ever recommended betting two hands in a DD game! I've never done it in my life. That tactic is intended just for the shoe game.
In recent years, even there, it has drawn some heat. You might do better playing two hands (of 75%) all the time, from the very beginning, no matter where you play.
But, in DD, do NOT start with one and then spread to two at +4 or +5.

Thanks setting me straight, Don. I also appreciate Norm's response.
