Artguy: 2Dk spreads
I am wondering what the ideal spread is for a no-heat 2Dk game (S17 DA2 Ndas sp4 spA1 NS 80%pen $5-$100)using Kelly C.)
I normally do a 1-12 over two hands but in recent posts I have noticed that a 1-8 is recommended. If I went with a 1-8 spread would I play 1-6 on the first hand then drop back to 1-4 on two hands?
Thanks for the help

The "recommended" spreads should be considered minimum spreads. If you spread less than 1-8 on the typical 2D game, you may not be satisfied with the hourly EV.
In many DD games, spreading more than 1-8 (or even 1-8, for that matter) will draw unacceptable heat.
Bigger is better. The factors that normally limit spreads are heat and bankroll.
If this is truly a no-heat game, and your bankroll can handle it, the ideal spread would be $5 - 2x$100 (or even 3x$100). This is nearly the same as wonging out on negative counts.

I agree that bigger is better with spreading; however, I take exception to your point of a "truly a no-heat game". I believe an attitude like that will come back to haunt you one day...do we not take into account the "Eye" any longer?

Parker,
What would the betting ramp look like for this kind of spread? Would it be a hyper variation of Kelly? BTW, this is the only casino I would take this kind of liberty at. The PB is an AP, knows who I am and is very tolerant of my action even though I win...but I don't go there too often (3-5x/yr)

A typical 2dk spread looks like this:
+0 - 1 unit
+1 - 2 units
+2 - 3 units
+3 - 5 units
+4 - 7 units
+5 - 8 units
Now to reduce variance, you might not double your bet on the +1 counts and what for a +2 to increase in your bet (and try to bet less than 1 unit, or not play if possible, on negative counts).
To increase your spread, increase the jump on +4 and +5 counts, don't mess with the lower counts, and if you see the rare +6 or more -- hammer them with 15 unit bet.

Hard 8 :: ::: Re: Less finesse
Although it may be less than mathematically optimal, a ramp that goes:
-4 Bathroom
-3 to +1 1 unit
+2 2 units
+3 4 units
+4 8 units
allows a purely parlayed approach, that helps make you look like a regular, boring gambling schlub who occasionally goes on a tear. On some high count winning streaks a ten-unit bet will still fit my bankroll. Under heavy scrutiny, I often bet two units off the top.
Regarding the -4, I have tried higher numbers, but some days it seemed like I was running to the bathroom every few minutes. Even an old guy like me shouldn't have to go that often :-)
