    Victoria: A little knowledge, misapplied

Sitting at a 6D table, usual rules including DAS, there is a guy at third base with a BS card.
I get a pair 4's vs dealer 5 and split. He begins to repeat his mantra over and over and over again, "Do not double 8 and never split 4's", and he even throws his BS card over to me. I throw it back and say something like, my gut tells me to split and that is how I play. I did notice though that the card was for a no DAS game. I land up with a double on one of my 4's and the dealer busts, so I win on all. He shakes his head and says pure luck.

Should I hire this guy for cover?

Should the casinos give out these cards for free since people can not figure them out anyway?

If the card came from that casino, is it fraud to sell a no DAS card in a casino that offers DAS on all it's blackjack games?

Fraud? It is pure marketing genius.

You shouild whip out one of our new BS cards and tell him, "Now, here's what a REAL BS card looks like!" :-)

Surely, the guy who orders for the gift shop knows as much about whether or not the casino currently offers DAS (or, for that matter, what's on the cards) as the man in the moon, so there's no fraud intended.

But, because many cards don't come with versions for various rules sets, or with explanatory material that should accompany them, players often get the short end of the stick.

    please keep them coming.

If I were in your shoes, with this guy spouting off, I would have torn him a new A-H#L*. Can you dig it? But that is just me.

A few years ago at Mystic Lake Casino in MN I was dealt a pair of 4's against a 5 or 6. When I put out my second bet and told the dealer to split and not double the only other player player shouted "What are you doing?"

I told him I hope I can double down.

I ended up doubling both hands and winning both.

He got up shouting and drawing attention from the pit "I can't play with someone who does something so stupid!" and he stormed away.

Hopefully the count was good and thus gave you a few more hands, having one less player to share with!

Tearing him a new you know what, could cause you to say something which overheard may tip off the pit that you know what you are doing. Better to just tell him you play on instinct. If the count is high; begin telling him about the time you split your tens. Good chance there will be one less player on the table who is now walking around telling people he just talked to the world's worst blackjack player.
That said, I have had my moments when annoyed with a ploppy, they get both barrels, but controled.

I think the pit, in a short time, can tell we know, a little, what we are doing, doncha think?

    Me thinks so!

Jay: What is interesting in this case..

Unlike so many ploppy stories we like to tell, this person at least was trying to play "right" based on their limited knowledge. It really wasn't their fault they were using a flawed BS card. On the other hand, they shouldn't take it so personally when somebody else plays differently.

A couple of my favorites are the person who continually repeated "the 2 is a dealer ace", or the one who said "I have been beating this game for years and never hit 16 against a dealer 10".

    Best of luck.

    Jay
