    Maverick2: Automatic shufflers

I'm noticing more and more that if I'm at a table playing by myself against an automatic shuffler, the cards don't seem to be coming out randomly. Instead, they're somehow benefitting the dealer to have 21s and blackjacks.

It doesn't seem to matter if the count is high, the shuffler seems to have more of an effect on who wins the hand.

I'm referring to automatic shufflers - not continuous shufflers.

I've played 130 days this year - mostly in the Seattle area and Colorado. So I have a sense of when the cards are coming out randomly, and there is a back and forth to who wins the hand. I'm aware there can be lopsided variations as to who gets the good cards. But some of these situations lately have been relentless with win after win for the dealer.

I'm curious if others have noticed this effect.

What you describe is most likely selective memory reinforcing some preconceived notions. As I have often stated, one of the difficulties of advantage play is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to draw any meaningful conclusions based on personal experience at the tables. Variance is too high and our sample size is simply too small.

Um, if you could actually "sense" when the cards are coming out, then either it is not random at all, or else you are psychic. If anything, the fact that the cards are not coming out the way you anticipate would seem to indicate that they are indeed random.

Automatic shufflers are in widespread use and have often been beaten by counting cards. If anything, they help by speeding up the game. Obviously they are a problem for shuffle trackers, but there is no reason a straight counter should fear them.

Is it true that the max bet in Colorado is $5?

Parker, I agree that there is nothing wrong with auto shufflers from a strict counting standpoint and you do get more hands in. My only peeves (and they are really minor) is that first; you loose that down time when I augment my cover (talkitive and friendly) with even more talk. Secondly, if you are wonging out of a shoe (yee old bathroom break) you need to time things closely to be back for the next shoe.

I believe that was recently changed to $50.00, no?

I did some Googling, checked the American Casino Guide website, looked at several Colorado casino websites, and searched a few blackjack and gambling message boards.

I found no mention anywhere of the $5 table games limit being increased.

I was there last week, all games were still $5.

I also did some checking and came up with the same results as you. I could swear someone told me or I read somewhere that it was on the November ballot and passed to raise the max to 50 dollars but it certainly looks like I was mistaken, sorry.

It may have very well passed on some ballot, but many times initiatives have to pass twice in order to go to legislature or to become law, so it may be a couple of years yet before any increase is to occur. Now, bear in mind that I have no idea if there actually was an initiative to this effect. Any CO voters out there?
