We have purchased "casino weighted" chips at the Gamblers General Store in Las Vegas. Very nice for practice at home and adds a touch of "realism" to the play. Hope that helped.

I think that, generally, the heavier the better. The Klondike casino in Vegas uses 11.5 gram chips for their reds, but crappy plastic 8 gram ones for their greens (foil embosses no less!). You can REALLY tell the difference between them.
Probably most people go with 11.5 gram since they are a decent weight. The 8 gram ones are very light and feel like toy chips. The 13 grams chips are great, but they are more expensive and probably nobody is going to notice.
The chips from the General Store in Vegas are fairly typical. They are a decent weight, but they are mostly plastic with a metal core to add weight. I've never been a fan of plastic chips. They feel too smooth for me and they have a funny kind of "clink" sound.
Here are the chips that I bought when I built my table:

Should I consider getting another handle?

No.
I'm sure the other guy's handle was inadvertent. Parker will deal with it when it comes to his attention.
