    Jeff: seat

I noticed this past weekend that sitting in the last seat is probably the worst one for card counters. I was playing double deck, and in high true counts, it seemed like the rest of the table made good hands, and by the time the cards got to me, the count was closer to flat, and I got crap. Is there a common knowledge out there as to which seat is best for counting? Should I play first base?

You are suffering from a common misconception. You must place your bet before any cards are dealt. After that, it makes little difference where you are sitting. You have no way of knowing how the cards will come out, and they can just as easily help as hurt you. Of course, guess which times you are more likely to remember?

Actually, there is a small advantage to be gained by sitting at third base, as you will see more cards before having to make your playing decisions for the hand.

However, casinos know this, and you may be more likely to get heat when seated at third base.

Finally, many ploppies subscribe to the myth that "third base controls the table," so when you hit your 12 vs 6 in a negative count and "take the dealer's bust card" you may incur the wrath of the other players at the table.

Which may or may not bother you. :-)

you mention. It is far more important to be concerned about the number of players at the table than where you end up sitting. At least in the game you mention, very important.

This is a bit funny. For a long time, most casinos have known this and most players have known casinos knew this. So, most counters sat just to right of third base. But, most casinos have also known this for a long time. (decades)So that no longer works either. So you may as well sit at third base. Many counters sit next to where third base would be but block access to third base. But, casinos know that too Just don't sit at first base and slouch.

When in doubt about where to sit at a crowded table, just plop down in any ole seat and commence splitting every pair of tens you receive at minimum bets. Soon enough, you will have your choice of spots (if you know what I mean).

A word of warning....Do not try this at your home base (casino of choice) for they will not appreciate you chasing their bill paying regulars away (if you know what I mean).

    Cyrus: Seating Paradox

"For a long time, most casinos have known this and most players have known casinos knew this. So, most counters sat just to right of third base. But, most casinos have also known this for a long time (decades). So that no longer works either."

OK, what we have here is this :

Casinos know that counters will preferably see on 3rd base. But counters know that casinos know this, so counters will sit instead in the next best seat, which is the seat next to 3rd base.

However, it is logical for casinos to immediately understand this and look for counters sitting at the seat next to 3rd base. Of course, counters realize that this is what casino will look for and sit themselves at the next beast seat, which is the seat at the left of the center seat.

Naturally, casinos figure out again that the counters are sitting precisely in that seat. Counters realize this and seat themselves at the next best seat, which is the center seat.

By the same process, the counter runs out of possible seats. So, the question is, On which seat can the counter sit down?

...This could be the logical affirmation of wonging.

This is yet another version of the surprise paradox:

Swedish civil defense authorities announced that a civil defense drill would be held one day the following week, but the actual day would be a surprise. However, we can prove by induction that the drill cannot be held. Clearly, they cannot wait until Friday, since everyone will know it will be held that day. But if it cannot be held on Friday, then by induction it cannot be held
on Thursday, Wednesday, or indeed on any day.

What is wrong with this proof?
