Sad passing
For those of you who've been around this game for a few years, you've undoubtedly at some point come across the work of R. Michael Canjar, although you may know him better as MathProf.
For those who haven't heard of Mike, he has made an amazing contribution to the study of Blackjack mathematics, winning BJ21's post of the month award a record 16 times. Don Schlesinger called him "the heir apparent to Peter Griffin."
Sadly Mike has lost his ongoing battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed by all in the community.

M. Canjar was a highly educated and brilliant man and was a Professor at University Of Detroit Mercy.
If you ever had the opportunity to play BJ live in the casino sitting at the same table with him it was an amazing experience.
I learned several things from MP through the years that influenced my play greatly.
He had mentioned at times of writting a book about BJ, and his experiences, I hope he did and now that he has passed, maybe , it will be printed.
Ouchez.

with all due respect and not meaning to be crass, after having read this thread i was inspired to do a small bit of research on the gentleman.
in the course of that research i found a most interesting paper by him (which i've not read in entirety), a paper that address's some questions i've been entertaining regarding risk of ruin and certain types of advantage play:
edit: whatever just exactly the situation he describes in the paper"Indeed, let us consider a game in which there is a huge bonus payoff, or jackpot, J. It is clear that if we increase the
size of J, our RoR decreases. However muB/sigma^2 decreases, so the approximation
suggests a higher RoR!",
well, this is the same situation i've been wondering about regarding the accuracy of ROR determined for the above alluded to advantage play.

edit: related article by other authors:

edit: kinda of shows how mathprof is still helping us, even when he's gone. may he rest in peace.
