4 deck: looking for a count system
scenario:
at the start of the shoe, dealer burn the cards off the deck depending on the value. dealer burns a card and take the hole card after everyone has played their hand .rules are h17,das,late surrender. no discard rack and the shoe is in a black casing with cover on top.the only way i could think of how far the shoe is, is to count the cards played. is KO the most suitable count for this conditions since it does not require true count conversion? or should i stay with BS, no counting.thanks for all your responses.

Are you talking about a continuous shuffle machine?
Do they ever let the players cut the cards? If not, it's a CSM. Never, ever, play one of those.

Homer J. Simpson: Re: looking for a count system
I'm not sure I entirely understand your question. Do you not know how many decks the shoe is? That is the only reason I can think of as to why you might think KO is the only option. It should not be difficult to figure out how many decks are being played. Just take a look during the shuffle and it should be quite easy to figure out. If you can't figure it out, simply ask. Now, as for a counting system, use KO if you don't like dealing with quick multiplication and fractions (converting to a true count). If you don't mind converting to a true count, try Hi-Lo. If you are feeling daring, you can start with a level two count (cards with tag values between -2 and 2), such as Zen or UBZII

ET Fan: You should be able to estimate pen ...
... by counting the number of hands going into the discards. Rule of thumb is 2.8 cards per hand. (Don't forget to count the dealer's hand.) To be conservative, you could use 2.6, forget the burn cards, and figure 10 hands = half a deck.
I never cared for unbalanced counts, but if I had to play this casino all the time, I guess I'd learn KO, Red Seven, or unbalanced Zen. The LS makes it worthwhile to play, and it NEVER hurts to count, IMHO.

Sorry, I guessed wrong. Your description was consistent with a CSM, especially with no discard tray.
