Yep, you're right, $3,000 is the limit to take out of Russia.
I heard that a firm was offering to wire excess money to anywhere in the world at a whopping 15% charge.
Not sure what would happen if you got caught trying to take more out of the country - they'd probably confiscate it. Last time I came back I had 400 cigarettes, portable language translator and mobile 'phone charger taken out of my suitcase at Moscow, without me knowing, probably from the baggage handlers.
I suppose, if you were planning to return shortly, you could always take casino chips away - not sure what would happen then if aiport officials found them on you.
Best regards
Geoff

What are the precise laws? You declare the money when you go to Russia and may take with you maximum your initial money + 3000$ ? Or you may have maximum $3000 in your pocket, what would be fatal?
If you may take your initial money + 3000$ I have an idea:
Declare more money than you really have when you go to russia.

Orson: Legislation has been chaged recently
Now you are allowed to take out 10'000$ MORE than you brought in (or 10'000$, if you declared nothing at entrance). Say, your bring in 15'000$. won 9'000 and declare 24'000$ on exit (showing your entry declaration), then there is no problem. You only got problems if you are lucky enough to win more than 10'000$.

Orson

As correctly stated above by Orson, it is initial money (unlimited) + 10K.

You are not alone in inventing this "by-pass" scheme :-))), but other clever guys already burnt such an option. Now at the arriving customs point they always count money and compare it with declared amount.

1. Russia.
The best way to get the money out of here for the foreigner is to have some local friend whom you trust. There are many methods to transfer the money at any place in the world for the rates MUCH lower than 15%.
2. Kenya.
What about games there? Do you have some experience? Rules? Heat? Cheating?
Luck.

And if I have false dollars to show them? They can count them, and if i win i throw them away and substitute by good dollars. What is the risk? Is this already known by customs?

Orson: Re: fake dollars
Guys, are you really that crazy??? I think transporting fake dollars across the border will get you to prison faster than anything else, except drug trafficking. And I don't think Russian prisons is much fun.
