MGP: OBBO vs BBO - A survey

There is some confusion still about this rule.

What have people's experiences been with this rule please?

Do the casinoes remove all busted bets, and then one more if the dealer has blackjack? This is what I think is more appropriately termed BBO, or "Busted Bets plus One"

Example 1 - Player splits to 3 hands - busts the first 2, including the "original", and then dealer takes the 3rd resulting in a loss of 3.

Example 2 - Player splits to 3 hands - busts the 2nd and 3rd hands, and the dealer removes the "original" bet, also resulting in a loss of 3.

Or do they only remove all busted hands and then only the original bet if it hasn't busted? This would be a true OBBO, "Original and Busted Bets Only."

Example 1: Player busts the first 2 hands, then the dealer returns his 3rd bet to him since the first, or "original" hand was already taken. The net result here is a loss of 2.

Example 2: Player busts the 2nd and 3rd hands and the dealer takes the first, or "original" hand resulting in a loss of 3.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sincerely,
    MGP

    MGP,

This rule is used in Crown Casino, Melbourne. The rule is that the dealer will take only one unit in addition to busted hands in the event of a dealer blackjack.

Short version: If the dealer gets a blackjack you will lose your busted hands outright. You will also lose an amount equivalent to your original bet (one unit). No matter how many splits or doubles remain unbusted on the table, you will lose only _one unit_ from these. (If you have unwisely partial doubled, then you will lose the larger original unit and keep the smaller partial one.)

    Long version:
So, suppose you have a pair of 8's versus a dealer's 10. You split and draw a 10 on the first of your two hands and an another 8 on the second hand. You resplit and bust on your second hand and draw and 10 on your third hand. You now have three hands and three units on the table (of which one is busted). If the dealer gets a blackjack you will lose only one unit in _addition_ to the busted one for a total of two units lost.

If you had, instead, busted on two of the three hands you would have still lost an additional unit from your non-busted hands. The fact that you only have one non-busted hand left is irrelevant, it is still lost. Thus, you lose all three units.

Now let's suppose you have the original 8s vs. 10 scenario. This time, however, you bust on the first hand but draw a 3 on your second and third hands. You double on each of these hands and now have 5 units on the table (one of which is busted). The dealer gets a blackjack but you only lose one additional unit for a net loss of 2 units out of 5.

    Hope this helps.

Are you absolutely sure about this?
How about the Star City in Sydney? Do you have any info on how this rule is played there?
Another question: What if you do a crazy thing and bust a double down hand?

    Thanks for your answers!

I am as sure as I can be. I have been in both the Crown and Star City so I am rather confident of my answer. The only difference, as far as the OBBO rule goes, between Crown and Star City is that in Star City partial doubling is not allowed. Star City's condtions suck, by the way. I'd stick with Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra or Adelaide.

    > Another question: What if you do a crazy

In Sydney you may double only on a hard total of 9, 10 or 11. So, it is impossible to bust on a double since you will receive only one card.

    No problem!

    MGP: BBO 2, OBBO 0

Thanks past crazy and Knight of Dawn for your replies. So Australia is all BBO (or BB+1).

How about other locations - does any place use actual OBBO?

    Thanks again in advance,

    Thank you again KOD.

So we're seeing that no place takes the "Original Bet" part literally in all of Australia.

I saw that some places in Canada also have "OBBO" - but are these also "BB+1" or are they truly OBBO where only the first hand of the split is collected plus busted bets? How about elsewhere?

    Thanks again in advance,
    MGP

When is comes to OBO joints you have four choices in Oz: Breakwater, Jupiters, Reef, and Treasury. Of the four only two are good for big action. You can do quite well on the Gold Coast playing black. The only trouble is that they are more likely to bar you than other places. For this reason, your BSE expectation isn't as important as the pen and the heat. If you are just going for a week or a month, I'd say have at it. If you are planning anything longer you would be well advised to consider Crown, Adelaide and Canberra even though the climate isn't as nice. =)

I'm not familiar with Canadian casinos at all so I would be the worst person to ask. =)

    As for the rule variations...

OBO means 'original bets only.' If the dealer gets a blackjack you lose your original bet and only your original bet regardless of doubles and splits.

OBBO and BB+1 are two ways of saying exactly the same thing. If the dealer gets a blackjack you will lose all bets that went bust plus an amount equivalent to your original wager. The rule is weird enough without having more than one way of refrring to it.

All bets lost, of course, means exactly what it says. If you split or double you will lose it all.

I bet Rob McGarvey would know, or be able to find out. I think you know where to find him?

Adelaide was 'all bets lost' until about 2 years ago. They now offer the same rules as at Crown.
