    first year results

So as my first year comes to a close (well I started in late may 2012 but took 3 months off right when I started cause I could tell I wasn't ready so basically I started in September). Since May I have played 450 hours part time. The first 170 hours were break even and the lowest point I hit was down 30k. Since October I started introducing some more ap methods. I basically started off playing mid black right off the bat which was a big mistake. I got a lot of heat and its hard for me to play in my local stores because of my early mistakes. Because of that I have been traveling a lot more and really like that part of it. I get to see the country and actually make money at it as well. I find that very satisfying (although im sure it will get old) . I am single with no family and fairly young so I find traveling exciting. I have now decided to put the counting on the back burner because most of my heat (if not all) has come from counting I am re assessing the years results and I have make about 130k in my first year from AP. The last 6 months of my play I have really taken it very seriously with massive amounts of scouting. I could def see myself doing this fulltime in the future as I like this line of work much much more than my current line of work but I am not foolish enough to leave my current position till I have at least 3 more years of experience under my belt. When I first started posting on this site I told everyone I would give updates so as my first year closes I wanted to give a brief update..

Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement throughout the year. There are a lot of newbies on this site but there are some pro's and that's frequent this board as well. My best advice is to players newer than myself is to stay humble, not be too aggressive with these senior members (cause they really gain nothing by helping you), and remember a thank you goes along way.

What do you figure your average bet was for those 450 hours? How long did it take to recoup the 30k and how did you avoid back offs?

1)kind of hard to say because there are other games besides bj in those hours. for counting I started playing 2x25-2x300 or 1x50-2x300 then moved up to 1x50-2x450 and then 2x50-2x600 or 1x100 to 2x600 if the 50's were crowded....I will say that 2x600 is a pretty bad top bet but if your playing 100 dollars tables it really is the min you can spread too. I did the white rabbit approach and wonged out of -4 shoes (zen)

    2) I lost 30k in my first 70 hours and then it took me to 100 hours to get it all back so I basically broke even for 170 hours.

    3) How did you avoid back offs..... I didn't.. part of the learning process. I think if you want to black chip it you need a play all approach at most stores because of the lack of high limit tables and if you playing all I would like to have a 1-40 spread with cover. With that being said I wouldn't feel comfortable with that spread with cover without a 450-600k bankroll which I don't have. Also hiding ur identity to the casino becomes really tricky because of CTR's at that level. If you play multiple venues (which is a must at that level) you need to have a massive chip inventory or know other tricks that I dont' know about or do other things I am not willing to risk at this moment. So I basically told myself if you want an EV of higher than 250-350 an hour you need to do other things besides counting...as least with my knowledge of how to hide ur identity from the casino

with that being said... ALL OF MY HEAT HAS COME FROM COUNTING

Congrats on your first year. It sounds like you have really grown and I appreciate you sharing. As being new top card counting I have learned alot from your posts, especially hiding your identity. Thanks for sharing!!

    Well done, smallcap!

Do you still remember what your session time for each casino was at these levels? 45 mins? One hour? Or you leave after you pushed out a certain number of max bets at each casino? I can imagine getting some attention playing at these levels.

    Thanks. --John

what I do when counting now is once I hit my max bet on that shoe I leave. So basically I raise my bets then leave, it sux but it works if there are a lot of casinos close by. If the casino is huge and has multiple pits I might start up again in another pit. If I score big in a shoe I will not return for shift. This isn't bullet proof but I do my best to play with as minimal cover as possible so I figured leaving when I raise by bets would be best. This is why I rather go to destinations with multiple casinos close by. I also start a new shoe with something more than min off the top and mix it up a bit, uneven betting spread out on two hands. I still get backed off a lot but I am pretty sure this is all from previous heat when I was in my first months just camping out and spreading black. LIke I said.. with my current knowledge I kind of think my earning potential is capped at 250-350 per 100 rounds for counting.....I don't want to completely screw myself when I learn more....

also another thing I do differently now is I do not get friendly with the pits. I really don't see a benefit to doing this because it makes it 100X harder to recycle the place when you are chummy chummy with the staff. There are a couple of casinos I will never be able to return to cause of this...I rather just keep my head down put on a hat and play no matter how sketchy it looks....I am usually out of there the first sign of heat sooo.. I rather be forgotten then liked.

Wow, that sounds like a great year!

How far ahead/even/behind are you, EV wise?
