    blackjack player here

Hi guys. Just joined a while back but not had time to post.

Just got back from casino tonight so thought I would introduce myself.

Interested in playing blackjack (UK) and also trying to learn basic strategy - probably 80% there.

Can play reasonably well on the tables - always play side bet where you have to make 3 card trick with dealer for 9-1.

Just wondering what's up here, what most of you guys play. Not sure if this forum is mostly for card counters, or whether you guys are just blackjack players?

Just about everyone here is a card-counter or some other form of advantage play. I don't think there are too many people here who play blackjack just for fun...they play with an advantage and play to win. If you are interested in learning to count, you've come to the right place.

I don't know if you just play for fun, which is fine in my opinion. Just know that you're playing a losing game. If you like the thrill of the 3-card side-bet, go for it. Just know it's a complete sucker bet and you are just handing money to the casino. I would also strongly advise that you learn basic strategy 100%, to a tee. To generate the proper basic strategy for your game, go here: http://www.blackjackinfo.com/bjbse.php - at the bottom left, there is an area to specify your game's rules, decks, etc. Choose the right stuff, click "Get the Strategy!", and memorize the chart!!

Second table titled "UK". I recommend not learning the table but the hands separately in a random order (e.g. flash cards).

Once this is second nature, learn to count. KO or HiLo are good starting counts.

    Good luck!

I play for fun. That said, I did a lot of work preparing to have my fun.
Until you have BS down pat for the game you are playing, do not be ashamed to bring a plastic chart and consult it whenever in doubt.
The easiest count I have come across is in Fred Renzey's Blackjack Bluebook 2. It starts out extremely simple but allows you to expand it rather easily.
I no longer use it, but highly recommend it to beginners.
Another great book is the "Blackjack Zone" by Eliot Jacobson. This book really tears down all the misconceptions people who play BJ for a while have. I know the author is not especially liked by some people here, but I think this book is essential to becoming a better player.
Best of luck. Stick around and you'll learn a lot. Some of the top players in the world freely exchange their views here. Some world class wannabe frauds ,as well, so don't take everything here as gospel.

I do enjoy the game regardless, but obviously winning is better.

Always play with my friend, we are doing a profit share and over 3 visits we are £700 up- with a £150 max budget at each visit.

Thing is, I know the odds don't support this being a success.

I am interested in learning to count, but wondering how much advantage it can give?

If you don't learn to count or find some other advantage, the chances that you can play for the rest of your life and show a profit are almost nil.
If you do learn to count, the chances of you not making a profit over your lietime are almost nil.
That a good enough advantage for you?

In the UK, it's not amazing but you can find some decent counting games. I would estimate around 0.2% of your bankroll per hour assuming a fairly standard level of risk in your bankroll. So it depends on how much time, effort and money you want to throw at it...

And you have to be on a table that uses a shoe (rather than a electronic shuffler) right?

And how easy is it to keep under the radar?

Thanks. It might be a while- I need to learn BS 100% first. Then I will start learning. What's the best count to learn for beginners?

This is always slightly contentious but I personally recommend HiLo (which is balanced and needs true count adjustment). If you really have trouble doing mental arithmetic then KO could be right for you!

That you're currently ahead makes it so much more entertaining. Keep playing, but get ready for some gut wrenching losses. This game will test your stomach.

I agree. Hilo is always my recommendation for anyone just learning and that will play primarily shoe games. And it is useful in the event you join a team.
