    Breaking Down a $5,000 Chip

I did something really dumb. I accepted a $5,000 chip at a blackjack table instead of insisting on yellow chips as I always do if I have more than $5,000 of chips. Cashier wouldn't accept without ID. Anyone have any suggestions about how to get it broken down or find someone who can do it?

go to baccarat table to break it and play a few hands at a low cost .

I have thought of that or perhaps going to poker room, but I would imagine they would ask for player's card, and not see record of play to support acquisition of the chip in which case they won't break it down. I would think there is also a risk of it being confiscated in that situation.

Before you forget, write down the day, time and table where you were given the chip. The casino may require an approval from the pit boss who was on duty at the time and verified the color up. You will likely need that if you decide to cash the chip at the cage.

Spitballing an idea that is imperfect and COULD end up causing more headaches if they check on this or catch you. But also possible that it would work....maybe.

Buy in at blackjack for $5,000+ cash. Leave the $5,000 chip in your pocket.
Play a little bit. Cashout and get another $5,000 chip.

Go to baccarat or craps or whatever. Use one of your $5,000 chips and play a bit.
Take your chips and take a break. Return to the same BJ table or to the baccarat table and use the other $5,000 chip.

Or....go back to the same table or floor guy where you had received the $5,000 chip previously and just buy-in at the table with it. One assumes that he would remember you, right?

I think that is a decent and creative idea that could work, Sidecount. I see a couple of ways it could go sideways. The first $5,000 buy in, whether it be at blackjack, craps or baccarat, would require me to be at least at breakeven after play to get a $5,000 chip. If I run into a buzzsaw, I won't have enough to get a $5,000 chip and I also could lose a few hundred or more.

Assuming I get the second $5,000 chip, then if I go to a different game and pit area, my guess is that they may talk to the pit guy where I got the second $5,000 chip, in which case I likely couldn't go back to that pit with the second chip.

I was separately wondering too if you buy in for a game for several hundred and lose and then take a $5,000 chip out as a steamer to play more whether they would be fine with that and break it down or instead apply the level of scrutiny that the cashier does before cashing a $5,000 chip.

I do appreciate the thought and may give your idea a shot.

Just go to a blackjack table, high limit room or whatever, cash in your chip, and start playing as usual. Once done, take proceeds and head to cage.

But don't you think they will want to know or verify where it came from? I could be wrong, but I would think that they would look at history to see if you acquired it based on your play.

I would think wherever you use it, the casino would want to verify they gave it to you. Maybe at a high end store in high limit they might just take it without verification. But if you don’t look like you are a high roller it wouldn’t look natural.

You can always just give them your ID at the cage. You didn't get heated up during your play, right?

If you're paranoid, just wait a few weeks until they forget about whatever it is you're worried about before cashing the chip.

Or you just check change it at a table game and try to get smaller denominations.

Don't forget to jot down the day, time, and table where you received the chip. The casino may require approval from the pit boss who was on duty at the time and verified the color-up. Having this information handy will be helpful if you decide to cash in the chip at the cage.

I was playing under an alias, so I can give them ID, but just not for the person who was playing. If I give them my ID, the play won't show. I would have to say I played unrated on a prior trip and didn't have an opportunity to cash, in which case they probably won't cash it.

In theory, it would be good to try to get it broken down by buy-in at a high limit game so I have smaller chips that can then be cashed without scrutiny, but I'm not sure if that will work.
