Although this is true it should be recognized that most very successful companies from Google to Disney were mostly, initially, focused on creating massive goodwill and only worked out how to monetize it after identifying and serving a specific audience. These companies often revert to cynical monetization later but that's how you build a successful company.
When companies start behaving as you describe it is best for both employees and customers to get out fast. The only purpose of such activity is to make the CEO's performance look good for a few years before they get a better gig. The asset strippigg that went on will usually crash the company soon after (with someone else taking the blame).
