Well, if anything, I learned my lesson.. As gut clenching as it might be, double down always if it's the correct strategy, is the way to go.. If I HAD double downed I would have had a 19 on hand #1, the second hand a 20, the THIRD hand I would have taken the dealers 5 for a 13 and then I had the fourth 8 which I would have taken another card for ( which I will never know what it was since I left the game after the dealer making 21 ). So as Don pointed out, if I had played it correctly, I would have either won ( I don't think that there were that many 5's left in the deck ) or pushed or split some hands rather than losing all 4. The math is always right its' the human element and learning from mistakes like this so you never make them again is the hard part. I appreciate the guidance on this Don so much so I went out and bought 3rd edition.... Better to lose it the right way then always second guess yourself and ask what if's..

Actually that is not correct. What you did is called "resulting". You had an outcome and decided it was the right/wrong one based on the outcome. I have spilt and double down on high counts and lost all hands. I do so because the math says to do so *regardless* of the outcome of any particular hand. The math is that when you have an advantage, over the long term you will win more of those situations than you lose, not that you will not lose all hands this time around. Cheers.

I don’t believe you are correct with what Vondox is referring to. I think Vondox is relating what might have happened on this particular hand if he had played it as he should have but more importantly is saying that he should follow the math. All the time, as you have also said in your post.

Nice example of this happened this past weekend. After a nice streak on a "golden shoe", last hand ended up requiring a split and double at max bet. Lost both to dealer 20 which wiped my entire gain for the shoe. C'est La Vie.

Ian's book is a real gem. I appreciate his technique and find his to be the one I want to replicate the most. Optimizing for longevity.
@ rex1530I'm also on a big downswing. That nasty variance. Only you can answer this question yourself, but yes, do consider downsizing your bet, as well as replenishing your bankroll, plus perhaps giving yourself a break to get back into the right mindset. This is the approach I have taken after losing several thousands consistently over the past few months. Also keep practicing at home. Always keep improving your game. If you aren't perfect, you lose that edge and your bankroll.
