    Human Mission to Mars

    .
the link is from Nasa and they claim they may be able to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s
they also state that during the round trip the vehicle will have traveled more than one billion miles
however space.com says that the average distance between Earth and Mars is 140 million miles
I don't get this at all
I think the round trip will take about 1.5 years
they're going to need to carry an awful lot of food

a man should drink about 3.7 liters of water per day which weighs about 8 pounds
1.5 years is about 547 days
about 4400 pounds of water for each astronaut
if there are 5 astronauts that's more than 20,000 pounds of water alone
    whoa_______!!!

You make it sound like the water will disappear once it's been used. They'll be in a closed environment, so it won't. That's what recycling is for.

Now food, on the other hand, might be more of a problem.

The space ship would not take off from earth, but have a shuttle from earth to the spaceship.

An Olympic-sized swimming pool is filled with 660,000 US gallons of water. An imaginary scale under the pool reads 5,511,556 pounds

While the average distance between the two may be as low as 140 million miles, both planets are orbiting the sun in the same direction, so the spacecraft needs to make up this distance by catching up to Mars. Essentially, the spacecraft also orbiting the sun while making the journey. Think about passing a truck on the highway. You may travel a significant distance while your relative distance to it changes by only a few yards.

Yeah, MTU located in the U.P. of MI is a very good university, and one of its Alum's has invented a device to breathe Martian air.

I can't imagine they'd be bringing the money to buy in with along.

Or, if they're playing online, as they get further from Earth the games would become really, reeaally, sloooowww.
