Question Which version basic have I been learning?

Hello! I've been getting basic and counting down pretty well and I've been looking into deviations. I'm using Hi-Lo and don't really know which "version" of basic strategy I learned. I've been using the Blackjack Apprenticeships charts (https://www.blackjackapprenticeship....asic-strategy/) and found an app that has the same rules. I've heard that basic is supposed to change depending on H17 or S17, or even the rules of the table? I read somewhere that the blackjack apprenticeship's deviation charts aren't accurate, are they considered trust worthy?

    PancakeStacks,

    Welcome to the board!

The strategy on the page you linked seems to be a bit generic. It does not correspond precisely to the correct B.S. for any common set of rules and number of decks, though it seems closest to a H17 DAS game with 4 or more decks.

For a better B.S., I suggest you use the Wizard of Odds site. This link shows the proper B.S for a game with 4 or more decks for both S17 and H17 options:

    https://wizardofodds.com/games/black...ategy/4-decks/

If you want the exact B.S., the WoO also has tables showing the Expected Value for each two-year player's hand against each dealer upcard: see

    https://wizardofodds.com/games/black...pected-values/

    Hope this helps!

Someone posted this link on a different forum, but to me the chart for 4+ decks H17 looks identical to the black jack apprenticeship chart, what's the difference?
If you intent to count, how many versions of basic do you recommend learning? Would memorizing the two on the site you linked be enough?

MGP's Blackjack Combinatorial Analyser is a useful tool to generate the correct basic strategy for any given number of decks and rule sets. It's freely available and can analyse Spanish 21 as well.

The main BS chart provided by BJA is somewhat of a combined chart (h17/s17, etc.). With a membership, it provides additional charts with deviations and expanded deviations specifically for h17 & s17 games. If you're serious about card counting, I'd strongly suggest joining BJA.

    PancakeStacks,

The WoO suggests Surrender for H17 vs. A and for 8-8 vs. A, while BJA suggests Stand and Split, respectively.

I would suggest memorizing the correct B.S. for every game you play regularly, since even with counting you'll be playing B.S. on the vast majority of the rounds, especially in 6 and 8 deck games.
