    Boardwalker

    All:

I heard some sad news this week that Boardwalker passed away at the young age of 90. He was a frequent contributor to the BJ Forum magazine and other 21 forums and played a long time. His wife predeceased him by exactly three years to the day and was a successful AP in her own right as an over-royaled VP player. They had two sons who were quite successful in their professional careers. In his "straight" career Boardwalker was a research engineer who dedicated his professional life to the service of his country at the Naval Research Laboratory where he rose through the ranks from being an entry level engineer to a senior executive position where he was responsible for about 1000 employees and a major technical directorate.

I first met him about 20 years ago at an advanced technique workshop and we would sometimes play together when our travels took us to the same city. Most recently I went to a new casino with him a couple of years ago when he was 88. Always the AP he suggested i drop him at the gas station across the street from the casino so we wouldnt go in together. Of course that would not have been safe for him for him to cross a four lane, high speed, heavily travelled road so i proposed another approach. I did watch him play a shoe that day and was struck by the fact that he didnt make a mistake while i was watching. His most recent backoff occurred probably about 5 or 6 years ago when one of the managers at an "evil empire" shop told him that he was suspected of being a card counter and would not be allowed to play 21 anymore. He must have been in his mid 80s at the time and told the manager that he took it as a compliment as he couldnt remember his name most days.

Anyhow over the years we had lots of fun both at the tables and during an occasional dinner. I am passing along the above as i imagine some folks here may have remembered or met him. If anyone would like any additional information feel free to contact me at cohibacorona21 at gmail.

    Cohiba,

My condolences to you on the loss of your friend. Though I never met Boardwalker, I recall seeing his posts from long ago.

No need to say sad for a ninety year old. He definitely has accomplished a lot. People complained blackjack game conditions becoming worse 10 years ago, but today they still complain these much worse conditions. As long as there are card games there, people will beat them.
