Actually, the exact opposite is true. They were marking COVID deaths as pneumonia, heart failure, etc. If they don't know the underlying cause of death, they put down the resulting organ failure.

Straight from the CDC site.
How it works
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) uses incoming data from death certificates to produce provisional COVID-19 death counts. These include deaths occurring within the 50 states and the District of Columbia. COVID-19 deaths are identified using a new ICD–10 code. When COVID-19 is reported as a cause of death – or when it is listed as a “probable” or “presumed” cause — the death is coded as U07.1. This can include cases with or without laboratory confirmation.

Got my numbers from worldometer:
US cases and death
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/
US death is 68566.
Worldwide case and death
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Worldwide death 248094
You can certainly play with numbers, but just looking at resolved cases is a bad way to do it. It takes 30 days for a case to be considered resolved, but deaths happen more quickly than 30 days so there is a lag in more cases being recovered. If you waited until the active cases became resolved the numbers would be in line with Don's.
Assume 100 cases all happen at once. At day 15 there might be 5 deaths but no recoveries since a case is not resolved for 30 days. At this point in time all deaths and no recoveries. Just doesn't make an accurate picture.

Resolved cases is going to be about the least reliable stat you can look at because some because some places simply don’t or haven’t reported recovered cases only report confirmed cases and deaths, leave any recovered in active cases indefinitely. Filter those stats by states and it’s apparent, some states with over 80% of resolved cases deaths, Ohio 87% for example.
What it comes down to is that it is way too early to evaluate the stats in any detailed manner -- other than to say this is an awful situation.

DARN! Just when I got my Global Entry the COVID-9 happened. Didn't get to enjoy the full benefit of what the program have to offer until US reopen. I need a rest from the growing long lines 4:00 AM in the morning. At these times Global Entry will do, until I can afford myself a "G700 GulfStream Jet".
