Luck is nothing more than probability taken personally!
That applies to pros who play all over the USA. I play in Las Vegas, MS, Mo and the rules are quite standard, there are plenty of DD and 6 deck shoes and once you know your spread for a DD game or a 6 deck game, you can play. No need for software.
Most people are not traveling all over the world playing different games with different rules. People d3cide what the6 are looking for, what they are comfortable with and stick to it.
I disagree. He's made plenty of dumber/penny-wise pound foolish comments over the years.
And look at the bright side. He hasn't talked about snow for a few weeks.
This is far dumber than MWP's comment. There's no such thing as standard rules. There's S/H17; DAS, NDAS, D9, etc.; LS and no LS; RSA or not. And more important than rules is pen. Ramping varies much more by pen than it does by rules. But I guess you're right. If you are going to leave the table in a high count so you can lock in your $300 win and feel good, none of it matters.
No. For maximum effectiveness - calculate house edge on the fly with the ability to adjust your ramp from a minimum of what’s required to beat the game based on deck penetration and rule set, to a maximum of what the house will tolerate.
Having software, and becoming familiar with it will, if you put in the effort, allow you to manually calculate spreads at different counts at a near optimum level. If I’m playing heads up, get 3.5-4.0/6, I know I need to be Sledgehammer Sam with it’s associated variance, whereas at 5.0-5.5/6, I can be Artistic Andy.
Further, if you tip, your tips are non existent at lousy pen, and more generous at deep pen.
Zee, that's kind of naive don't you really think? Have not rules changed in all the locations you have mentioned? Have not places decreased or increased penetration? Have they not added or taken away S17, etc? This world is sure not etched in permanency and you should be willing to adapt. It doesn't mean you have to have the software but it sure makes life easier and can confirm your playing parameters. I know you can look up the initial house edge in books, counting all the rules at a particular casino. But having the software makes it easier, more consistent, and accurate. It's a small investment. Maybe 2 of your max bets.

There is nothing dumb about my comment. I agree with everyone that Norm's software is the best out there. In fact, I don't know of any other blackjack software that is still supported. I don't think having software is the most important thing to have. Learning basic strategy and knowing how to count well is much more important.
Many years ago I bought blackjack 6-7-8 software. It had a practice game and did sims. Can't remember for sure, but it might of created index values also. I think the price I paid was $39 (maybe $59) so Norm's software at $170 is quite a bit more expensive. Now blackjack 6-7-8 is no longer supported as I believe the same goes for SBA. However, Norm's software can do in seconds what Blackjack 6-7-8 took hours to do. I would leave sims run overnight with Blackjack 6-7-8.
I do appreciate that Norm has his software updated and compatible with Windows 10. I always wondered what would happen to his software if something was to happen to him. Who is going to support it an update it.
