Freightman, a 1000% with you. You cant entirely learn how to drive on a highway, practicing in your driveway and the same goes for card counting.
one way I differ from others is that I say, use a card in your local casinos when you are still starting to learn as they would come to know you from your daily visits. You will be making mistakes and it helps you. I ended up getting regular meal comps and then room comps in LasVegas, MS and LA. Once You go outside your area, you can use the comps to stay, go out and play anonymously.
There are are strategies to how you play when using a card once you get more accomplished (booking losses, keeping wins small, etc).
I made mistakes that got me on a database and unwelcome at local casinos but if I had to start all over again, I would still get a card, just not make some mistakes using it.
First, let me say welcome to the board. Now regarding that book, you are reading I strongly feel that is not the right book "more geared for high stakes play" for as you say in the title of the thread complete newbie. A much more appropriate choice would be something like Stanford Wong's Professional Blackjack or Blackbelt In Blackjack by Arnold Synder.

By NOT playing the deviations. If the index is to Hit on 12 vs 6 and you Stand as per basic strategy the casino will consider that a mistake...because it is a mistake. I guess if throwing the casino off your scent is a goal then it's a success....but you can use index play and be more selective with cover choices and accomplish much the same.

In the stores that I tend to frequent, I never really regarded surveillance as being good enough to catch onto deviations. On my most recent sojourn, a critter (whom I mentor on occasion) made some unusual comments - he had likely been obviously informed of a 13 v 5 hit, as well as a non ace ace split on 1 particular shoe.
I normally played heads up, however, I had 2 or 3 shoes with players on either side of me, each playing 2 spots. Heads up, I play a lot of nuances, however, when playing at an essentially full table, there is no time for artistry, and one must take immediate action. I won a $25 bet on the second last hand of a shoe, going to 2x150 (wanted to go more) on the last hand, doubling one of the hands, winning all.
I’ve considered sending the critter a text asking if I set off any alarm bells.
Sometimes, it’s just tough to figure out what’s going on.
