No, I'm not optimistic. If you know basic strategy, however, it is the best (lowest house edge) game in Vegas. Much better than playing slots or roulette, or messing with the one armed bandits. If you did well before, you had some good variance (got lucky).
Most of us started as recreational players. Eventually we wanted to CONSISTENTLY win, so we took up card counting. Even then, we all still lose sometimes.
I never go to Vegas "knowing" I will win. I never sit at a table expecting to win. I expect to play with no mistakes, and hope the cards fall in the right place. I know that long-term I'm a winner. But in any given day or trip, I may lose.
If you're a recreational player, I stand by my advice. Learn basic strategy. Play the best game (best rules) you can afford. Play slowly, so you accumulate more comps. And I didn't mention it before, but don't bet any of the side bets--stick to BJ only.
