    Confused about SD/hand in BJA3

The risk of ruin tables in BJA3 on pp. 116-121 have me confused. I thought the SD per hand of blackjack varied a little with the count but was always approximately 1.1. The charts on these pages have SD/hand on the X axis and the range is 1.5-4 - how does SD per hand change that much and what causes that change?

Best I can figure, the SD is being expressed as units, not as a multiple of the amount bet on an individual hand, and your spread determines which row you should reference since your average bet will be more units with a bigger spread. Am I close?
