And you can spend a 1 oz American Gold Eagle (worth ~$1200 in gold value) for $50, which is its denomination.

    21forme,

Just don't use those "$50" American Eagles to pay your employees:

Hornberger's logic doesn't make sense. The ruling exposed the fraud he is saying they tried to hide. His logic is that they are trying to hide the fact that the $50 gold piece, which is legal tender for $50 is now worth $1250 in gold. But that is exactly what they ruled. If they were trying to hide this they wouldn't have pursued the case. Clearly fraud was afoot as he paid the employees $1250 worth of gold and acted like he paid them $50. Come on, a monthly salary of $100? I am sure the agreement was for $1250 worth of gold. He skated around the withholding requirement by paying in gold. They fucked him for it. The punishment seems extreme to me. He says, "That’s why they needed to punish Kahre so severely—15 years in jail for using gold coins! " He got 15 years for paying his employees $1250 in property and acting like it was $50 in cash because it was paid in $50 gold pieces. I am sure the $100 a month salary was well below minimum wage which may be why he got such a steep punishment. He represented that he was paying slave wages. I am sure the accused had no political agenda in doing this and did it for personal gain. What would be the capital gains on those coins? Gold has gone up a lot over the years. You don't mess with the IRS.
