A couple of questions from an old-time Noobie

    Hello everybody,

    First time poster here.

In perusing the archives, I've noticed there is a famous (or infamous) member named Zee, I am not he. I'm ZZZZZ. So to not step on any toes, don't call me Zee. (Anybody remember "You can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay..."?)

Anyway, I've been a recreational counter since the early 1970s after I picked up Thorpe's Beat the Dealer for 25 cents at a used bookstore.

I'm retired now and have more time to devote to BJ and AP. I'm been to Vegas a few times this year and have had fairly good results while playing $5 tables and refreshing and sharpening my skills.I'll be heading back there in another few weeks for three days.

There are a couple of things I hope some of you veterans can help me with.

First thing I've noticed is that almost every player at every table at every casino has a player's card, except me. In the eyes of the Eye in the Sky and the Pit People, do I stick out like a sore thumb based on that alone? I am reluctant to sign up just based on privacy concerns, but is being an identified, non-anonymous player part of an effective cover? Is it needed?

Second, I try to stay off the Strip, because I don't like the crowds, traffic and all the distractions, and the low-stakes games just aren't very favorable. I don't know if it's cool to name actual casinos. but the ones I seem to have found a home at is the chain of about 10 casinos which includes the big building in SE Vegas/Henderson with a great view of the Sunset. They have a good 2 deck game, reasonably good rules, 3/2 BJ, and consistent 70% or so penetration using the slot in the discard tray, Am I missing anything about favoring these casinos? Are there other places to put on my radar?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    ZZZZZ

For someone who is not Zee, you sure sound a lot like Zee.

It seems awfully odd that a ZZZZ shows up right when Zee is serving a suspension and who would call Zee famous other than Zee? Isn't position with multiple handles a banning offense?

OK guys, whoever this Zee guy is, I ain't him. I signed up in July as ZZZZZ before I even saw anything related to this Zee guy. I use ZZZZZ on all other forums I post at.

I only know about him because as I said I came across some of his posts in the archive.

And why would he sign up as another Z and ask these newbie questions? If he was trying to create multiple handles and disguise himeself, I would think he'd use something totally different.

Should I sign up again as Fred Flintstone or somebody to get some help with my questions?

Sheesh, you guys are a tough crowd.

I was just letting you know how it looked. Everyone was probably thinking that since your first post timing was right after Zee's suspension that you and Zee were possibly the same. Painting out your join date was wise.

I could tell you weren’t Zee because your writing style is very different than his. But I must admit some of your questions were right out of Zee’s playbook. If you want some of your questions answered just look in the archives under Zee’s posts.

I had no idea this guy was suspended.

I guess the timing of my post was just one of those things, like hitting blackjack with a -10 TC?

There are differing opinions on this issue. Using a card deflects heat for a while. The casino usually makes a judgement on your ability and stick with whatever that was from whenever it was made until they update it. So using a card can keep you from being evaluated much of the time you play. A card can generate comps and seem like a great thing until it turns on you. Eventually they will peg you and playing BJ rated may become your worst regret. If they want your name bad enough they will get it whether you give it to them or not. There are just too many ways to ID you in these modern times.

I hope you like my writing style. I am a retired professional writer: corporate communications, software documentation, training manuals, etc.

    Thank you Mr. Three.

Yeah, I like it. I didn’t know you were a professional writer, but I could tell you had a good command of the English language and your posts have been very engaging and witty. Zee’s writing is completely different than yours. You called it right when you called this group a “tough crowd”. If you phrase something wrong or make the slightest comment against conventional AP wisdom, they will pounce. The key is to have a thick skin and don’t take anything too seriously. Asking questions about playing rated is like entering into the hornet’s nest. With this said, I thought Three did a good job answering this question.
