    Should Have Done a Zee

Nothing is more depressing than ending a blackjack trip on a down note. I was having a pretty good blackjack trip and noticed I had only about an hour left to play. I considered leaving early with a nice win, but wanted to reach my goal which was only about another $60 away to achieve. I decided to cut back on my spread an play a conservative game. I did this for about 15 minutes and then said to myself they are just going to grind me down this way. So when the opportunity came along for some larger bets I took them. No huge bets, but even a mid size bet becomes large when splits and doubles come along and you lose all of them.

So that little $60 win I needed to achieve my goal suddenly became several hundred dollars. Damn, its very depressing. I almost would rather have a loss with a nice come back than blowing a nice win. However, the trip was still good and no regrets. It actually turned out to be my 4th best trip of the year and was enough to wipe out my last two back to back losing trips. The trip put me at a new year to date high, but not by much, only $17.

Freightman, better get on the ball. I now have 160 hours of blackjack play in for the year.

If I had not previously read all of those many decent posts from you on two boards for many years, I would think I was reading a post from a complete moron.

The sooner you realize it's all one session the better off you will be.

Wow. I had to read this a couple of times. Goal? Cutting back and playing conservatively to reach said goal?

TC is now +5 but I reached my goal. Gotta go.

MWP, I think you were trying to prove a point to a friend or a family member who happens to agree with ZeeBabar.

We all play BJ for different reasons. For some, its 100% the money and in trying to get the max, they are willing to live with the stress of the swings of BJ. For others its recreational. That means, that along with the money, the recreational player wants to have an enjoyable time and to go home in a good mood, take the family out to dine and make everyone smile. The idiot pros who do it for the money, who need the $$$ for their bills do not get it.

For me, if I am up in $$$, have had a good time, am leaving the casino soon (maybe a hand or two away) and have plans for a social evening out, I am not going to screw it up chasing an additional few dollars. Greed kills.

When a thought like this comes into my mind at the table (and it does at times) , I tell myself "Don't play scared, or don't play at all".

If what you end up with for a trip matters to you, like you live off your profits, there is nothing wrong with forgoing that last hour of play and leaving with a big profit. If your BR is never touched, then the distinction of how you did on the trip is meaningless as that is an unrelated break in play that has nothing to do with anything other than limiting the number of hours you play in the long run. The answer of what to do therefore depends on the way you interact with your BR.

Wow, I could NOT have been said it better!!! Why do some people on this forum think there is only one motive (the motive to make serious money) to play? Why can’t they accept different people have different motives? I understand what you mean by “idiot pros”, but I wouldn’t call them “idiots”. I’d just call them close minded for not accepting we aren’t all the same, and therefore we have different motives for why we play. I’m always trying to improve my game, but not at the expense of taking away the enjoyment. If I ever see this as true work, I’ll stop playing.

Some of those idiot pros "your words not mine" do not do it for the money alone, they do because they can, and rather enjoy beating the casinos at their own game.

    It’s a joy.
In addition to house vig (which my wife really appreciates for her secret stash), it’s also pleasant for those family brunches, grandchildren’s day camps, little add on presents etc etc etc., that everyone in the family knows are complements of our Provincial Liquor and Gaming Comission, and other jurisdictions, while at the same time maintaining a strong bankroll. After all, I only do real work about 6-8 hours a week now
