This is true if you have the option to hit. There is a game which allows you to either double or stand only after splitting aces. In this case, doubling for as little as possible is sometimes the correct EV-maximizing play. This is because these hands would normally call for hitting and the less you double for, the closer it becomes to hitting.

That's interesting knowledge. Though I doubt it'll ever come in use. But you never know! I've once seen a double exposure blackjack on a cruise..........

yes doubling for less is +ev for me, because i do it so much and such horrible doubles i get to play forever. Doesnt matter thats is "mathematical wrong" play by simulation. Simulations are based on perfect play and faulty assumptions, real world understanding of value trumps sims. double for less when you are going to hit anyway, you have min bet out, and you have extra information in certain key cards needed to make your hand or hurt dealer hand being in deficit or surplus actually giving you an a very minor -ev of a few pennnies, even play, or edge on the hand, a mystery to any observer. Costing you a few pennies to look like poor player. like doubing hard 17 or 16, in deep negative counts when you kni6w 2/3/4 surplus and 7/8/9 deficit. or doubling hard 12/13 v dealer 8, when you know 7/8/9 surplus. Appearance of extremly stupid doubling significant part of my deep cover, hate to reveal it in public, but casino are stupid, they will never catch on anyway.

The best place to start is Blackjack Attack III Pg 370-377. The Catch 22 for HiLo are in Table 13.11

Read and understand the entire section to appreciate the value of this approach.

If you bet half-kelly for an ace, and then double a soft hand, that's half your bankroll on the hand!!!
I'll be crossing my fingers for you!!

my max bet is 2% of my bankroll (at least the bankroll i'm comfortable to allocate to BJ, not my entire net worth), but i play 2 hands. Nope not proud of the risk i'm taking but i'm aware of it. (If that's the point you are trying to make). I calculated my session RoR to be close to 15%. I've plan to adjust my bet size down if my BR starts diminishing, but lady luck happens to be on my side that session.

You might want to double for $1 on 12v2 if your play is being evaluated by software.
I like to double for $1 on 15 or 16 v 10. They actually think you are a nincompoop when they see it.

I dont think they value how you play as much as how much you bet. If you are consistently betting appropriately more when the count is high. you think they are going to ignore it because you doubled a 15 vs 10 with $1 dollar? Maybe if you had a $100 bet out and you doubled it for the full amount. Otherwise you are still toast.

I'm assuming this means you have knowledge that your first card will be an Ace with an approximately 50% advantage. Even so, the correct full Kelly approximation for blackjack is advantage / variance and half-Kelly would cut that bet in two.

I'm still not advising anyone to do this. I just thought that some of the confusion over the original statement could be cleared up.

WOW. Now i understand. I honestly think my english is not bad, despite not being native. But people here do love to speak in cryptic ways and bringing up non relevant points to exude superiority and show off their knowledge!

Anyway my statement is wrong, i'm not doing a full kelly. I dont have the skills to vary my bet that precisely based on advantage yet. I really just mean i'm taking on a ~~13.5% RoR to grow my BR faster.

Your English may not be perfect but you have read the resident experts perfectly!

About Blackjack: The Forum

BJTF is an advantage player site based on the principles of comity. That is, civil and considerate behavior for the mutual benefit of all involved. The goal of advantage play is the legal extraction of funds from gaming establishments by gaining a mathematic advantage and developing the skills required to use that advantage. To maximize our success, it is important to understand that we are all on the same side. Personal conflicts simply get in the way of our goals.
